David, I know that your last comment is not a revelation, but it suddenly makes me think back to how incredibly long it has taken to get to this point, almost 50 years after the dawn of the environmental movement. At least it seems like substantive work is finally going to take place. I wonder how many more years it will take this bloodstreams are free of some of these chemicals.

I don't have enough information to know but I suspect you are right to side with the whistleblower. As for your vision of what's coming in the next few years, I side with the vision that the environmental crises which are coming will change that outlook, mostly because I think our ocean environment is collapsing on nearly all fronts.

I think the current debate over BPA is a perfect example of Larry's point and verifies its intelligence nicely. The chemical industry is determined to go on using the stuff and maintains that it is safe. I don't agree and neither do those who seriously study its effects.

I don't think you are overreacting one bit, Lloyd. If capitalism is supposed to work so well and competition takes care of these kinds of problems, where are the companies jumping in with low-interest rate cards to service the market for responsible card holders? It seems that we have a gigantic collusion going on here. How do you see that?

It would seem that the whole debate brings out the worst in us in so many ways, Chris, but you are right that if we could just all focus together on this as a money problem, we'd make some progress. If we really did that, we might find out a lot of interesting things that would threaten people who are making a lot of money now.

I'm guessing that the chemical industry wants to slow down the process as much as possible to continue to make profitable but unsafe chemicals. Since they have very big bucks on their side, that will be hard to stop as long as we choose to continue to support their products. For example, there has long been an assumption out there that Glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup, is relatively safe because it degrades quickly. A recent article in Acres USA details new research that shows it may be responsible along with high phosphorus levels for making amphibians vulnerable to disease and that it does not degrade as fast as we've long been told. I doubt that it will even be considered in this process unless there is some huge extension of public knowledge. But if we are heading into The Great Turning, who knows what may be possible?

It's pretty astounding that it takes an act of Congress to make something like this illegal but it appears to be great evidence of how rotten such contractors are to the core, if they overtly try to avoid protecting their female employees.

Nice point, Ann. Henceforth, I will make The Great Turning part of my instructional vocab when I'm working with my students, and that will make even more of a difference.

The very existence of this article and the polite replies to it seems to me to be evidence for the existence of The Great Turning. I too have a sense that many things are coming together, just as the current speeds up as it enters the chaotic center of the vortex. A lot of my hope comes from working with students in the Purdy Recycling Project for four years now. Our innovative system recycled 100,000 pounds of material in a small town this past year and our goal is to double that this year. The program is nearly entirely student-run and kids are hungry both to do something big and proud of what they have achieved. Kids who grow up in schools without solid recycling programs implicitly learn that it is not important, but we are out to change that wherever we can. I had not heard of The Great Turning; I thank you for bringing it to my consciousness and it shall be part of my vocabulary now.

I found your post courageous, David and I think you make a key point over and over. There is, as some have pointed out, plenty of lack of integrity on both sides, but there is a big difference of degree in what the leadership of each party is doing. Part of that is the strange loss of leadership within the Republican Party to the wannabees who have a media platform, but apparently not the courage to actually take on the job of leading the country.
