Yes, Carla, I do recommend it, for several reasons: 1) the character portrayals of his cabinet are spot-on (most entertaining!); 2) the personal backstory shed light on some of his most confounding decisions as president, and helped me to understand the possible causes of his stubbornness and belligerence; 3) for those who might forever work themselves into a frenzy just thinking about him or seeing his face, it's a bit of a balm, in that it is sympathetic to him as a man (although not as a politician -- that part is still terrifying and infuriating). There's a scene in the film where things start going wrong in Iraq, and everybody is pointing the finger at everybody else ... and it's pretty bone chilling.

My goodness. That is thorough! Thanks for posting, Carla. I just saw the film "W" last week. This Rolling Stone article about John McCain exposes many parallels in character between the two men. And it took me almost as long to read the article as to watch the movie :o) Thanks again, Carla. It's always a pleasure to read your comprehensive and thoughtful posts. (And it is indeed an enormous relief to have his excruciating campaign behind us.)

Thanks to everyone -- especially Neetah. I'm no shining religious light, but my 86-year-old mother is. She's a Christian, a Liberal, and a loyal, enthusiastic Obama supporter. Unfortunately, she is beyond the age when she is able to stand up and speak for herself and her faith in a loud, influential voice. But she HAS shared her views with me -- OFTEN. And I know that she would be outraged by this sign, and the people and "ideology" it represents. They do NOT speak for her! She would deeply appreciate your comments, Neetah. And your courage. Thank you.

Well said, Dave. I was so proud of him, so proud of us. With all truly sweet moments, though, comes a melancholy ache in the heart -- a longing for those who aren't here to share the glory, and the inevitable foreshadowing of far less perfect times ahead. But I believe that this holding of darkness deep in our chests, even as we celebrate -- the tug and the conflict of that -- is precisely what makes it all so fine, what makes our joy complete.

Yes! On the Professor Jack Show -- with my girlscout troop -- in the mid-60s. Totally satisfied with the results :o) Others I've known? Hmm. Oh -- my sister-in-law was on a local news show in Minnesota once, talking about the Family Leave policy at her company. And most of my friends have been caught by the camera at least once while answering phones to raise money for PBS. Does this help?

I found the link to your article through the email that went to Gather members, which someone else commented on earlier.

I was delighted to discover such a lighthearted piece to read on this subject. It's clever and intelligent, and it really made me smile. Like others, I shared it with my off-Gather friends.

While I do know lots of D&D fans, I've never played myself. So one of the things I found most impressive about your writing is how you were able to clearly demonstrate your esoteric knowledge of D&D, without confusing those of us who have no experience with the game, or making us feel dumb or excluded.

You could have made this so much more complicated; instead, you used a relatively obscure metaphor to write about a complex subject in a clear, straightforward, and inclusive way.

That's not easy, Julie! My hat is off. Can't wait to read lots more of you out here.
