Folks... honestly, I see soooo many movies each year and Precious is really one of the very best films I've seen in the past 2 years. Please don't let the subject matter discourage you from seeing this. Sure, it's a painful story, but it is also very uplifting and inspiring, the perfect film to see with your family... if you don't have wee ones going, that is.

We are in complete agreement Cheri. Where are all the RRWN when it comes to actually taking care of all those kids living in poverty?

Actually in the US Declaration of Independence it guarantees all US citizens...wait, I'll quote from the wikipedia:
"Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" is one of the most famous phrases in the United States Declaration of Independence. These three aspects are listed among the "unalienable rights" of man."

So, can anyone really enjoy life, liberty or happiness if they don't have health care to ensure that life and that liberty and that happiness?

Can anyone enjoy freedom if they are too sick to enjoy anything? Can one be happy if they are dying from an incurable illness and can't afford to see a doctor or undergo treatment?

Can one enjoy life, liberty or happiness if they are busy fighting with an insurance company to cover their expensive medical treatments after repeated denials of service from said insurance company? Is it fair to make terminally ill patients use their last days of life fighting a huge corporation focused only on quarterly profits? In point of fact, in cases like this the insurance companies would be DENYING what our Declaration of Independence assures us we have the right to, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

So all those lying RRWN are denying what we Americans are assured in the Declaration of Independence and what we deserve as American citizens...and what those same elected RRWN are enjoying themselves as they deny the same to everyone else.

That multiple lawsuits haven't yet been filed is puzzling. I'm so sick of liberals giving in to RRWN BS and not drawing their own line in the sand.

Great article as usual Cheri, 10! I, of course, agree with all you said... as I usually do. But this piece also got me to thinking...

I saw a great film a few weeks ago and just reviewed it (if interested, can read it here: HOLLYWOOD POV: "Precious: Based on the Novel PUSH by Sapphire"), and the subject matter of the film along with some of the comments here got me wondering why someone hasn't yet sued the government/republicans/RWRN (Right Wing Religous Nuts)/No-Choice groups for allowing them to be brought into the world.

Some women just shouldn't be having children. Why hasn't anyone in the Choice movement thought to find kids who might sue those groups for allowing them to be born into in untenable situations?

So... they were still rarely played on radio and certainly never played on command as depicted in this film. Both songs had negative connotations to parents: Somebody To Love due to what parents perceived as popularizing "free love" a popular cultural notion regarding the 60's generation at the time; and White Rabbit due to what was considered popularizing taking drugs....one pill makes you smarter, and one pill makes you small, and the ones that mother gives you don't do anything at all..."

Thanks for the interesting insight Devin! Since I didn't read the book as a kid (I also never read the Pooh stories & lots of other pop kid lit I'm always hearing about from friends...what can I say? I was reading far past my grade levels since I was very young. I was prolly reading HP Lovecraft then LOL!). Anyways, I really didn't know what to expect from WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE, and sometimes that can be the best way to truly experience a movie.

At certain points in the film I knew with certainty that Jonez had recreated specific scenes from the book, they were that beautifully dark and imaginative and just plain artistic. Jonez' close friendship with Sendak obviously helped him channel Sendak's terse story and help find the perfect Max.

Thanks for the kudos Cheri! Yeah, I just saw that HBO piece...it was really interesting to see how the voice actors all rehearsed & performed together

Doc - you were maybe thinking of Anna Nichol Smith? Does Denise Richards' girls jiggle? I thought her boobs were made of silicon..and those babes are as hard as rocks & don't jiggle at all!

hey Elmo - nice to see you here again reading my reviews!

And thanks for the response about Chas' feeling depressed after seeing this. I was trying to decide how to respond to him, because I felt he made a valid point. And while WILD THINGS didn't leave me feeling depressed I must admit there were many times during the film that my eyes leaked... certainly the first time KW says "will you make us happy?" to Max was s tearjerker moment for me. Isn't that what everyone wants out of life? To be happy?

But on the whole WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE left me thoughtful and introspective about life...and I think that's a good thing. Too many people today don't stop and think about life and what they're doing and how their actions are impacting others around them (witness all the idjits shouting into their cell phones in enclosed spaces like elevators, bathrooms & banks)...all lessons to be learned from WILD THINGS.

It's really amazing to see so many people preaching against their own best interests... just like they did when LBJ created Medicare. Yeah, what a big failure Medicare is... it supports the elderly in their waning years when they need medical help the most...what an awful program. Right....NOT!

How can these idiots preach against their own best interests? And why are so many people buying their lies? Why are they more concerned about big health care corporations and their insane profits instead of individual people who need affordable health care? Honestly, these people are insane!

The only workable and obvious solution to our health care woes is Medicare for all, simply slower lower age eligibility until all Americans are covered.. It's a no-brainer!

Great article as usual Cheri!

Not only are these "Blue Dog" idiots not listening to their own constituents, and not only are they in the deep pockets of big Pharma & Ins companies, but I wonder how many of them have used the great government-run health care they get...especially the govt-run free health care office in the House & Senate.

What hypocrites!

I'm getting real tired of waiting till Obama finally moves on reforming health insurance...and doubly sick of Baucus' BJ to the health industry!

LOL, thanks for the kudos about my review Elmo, but, boy are you a curmudgeon!

There's no doubt that THE ROAD will leave people with strong feelings; people seem to either really love it or really hate it...and I see you fall into the hate it camp.

For me THE ROAD was a powerful experience, one that's stayed with me... and a film, I believe, that everyone should see, if only as a cautionary tale of what could be the future of humans on Earth if we don't stop polluting our environment, our partisan politics, and the human worship of greed.

Bummer! Why can't foods that taste good be zero calorie foods!?!

In a bazillion years I would never make, or eat cabbage soup. It sounded so disgusting I could't even read the recipe! ;')
