Pennsylvania AARP Members Back Health Care Reform Legislation by Prima Donna

Among AARP members, strong majorities reported that many of the bill's key provisions were convincing reasons to support the legislation. These include strictly limiting insurers from charging much higher premiums because of age (72%), closing the gap in Medicare's prescription drug coverage known as the doughnut hole (72%) and improving coverage for critical preventive services like cancer screenings (79%).

So let me ask you this, Ken and others, do YOU think:

insurers should be able to charge higher premiums based on age?
the doughnut hole on Medicare prescription drug covered should be closed?
there should be improved coverage for critical preventive services like cancer screenings?

The researchers are doing what good publishers typically do, and this one did not -- fact check.

I do find it interesting that Palin scores high among men. A sorry commentary. I work with a young woman who jokingly states, "all men are pigs." I'm beginning to think she has a point.

John, a bill without some form of public option is not health care reform. That is the only reform left, that and barring insurance companies from denying people based on pre-existing conditions. If there is no public option, there is no check on the insurance companies, which will not only get more customers now that everyone will be "forced" to get it, but will have free rein to raise rates and costs at will.

Has anyone read Howard Dean's book on health care reform? It spells things out very clearly.

"$3.9 million isn't that much." I'm sorry, Mr. Kennedy, but I have worked in management in big companies over the years, and I have to tell you, I just don't see how these CEOs are worth "that much." After they are rewarded like this, they start believing they are worth all of that, and more. I am not sure how they can live with themselves knowing that others are suffering.

Here is an example, posted to the blog of PA state representative Jesse White, of Pittsburgh:

This afternoon, a woman sat across my desk. She was near tears; her husband died suddenly last year, forcing her into the job market. She works a regular job as a dialysis technician, but cannot afford health insurance for her four daughters. The most recent setback came when her two school-age daughters were denied funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program, more commonly known as CHIP. Between her very modest income and the Social Security payments, she now exceeds the income limits for the program, but simply cannot afford to keep them enrolled at five hundred dollars per month.

Mr. Kennedy, I happen to believe health insurance is one of those businesses that should not reap profits. Pay reasonable salaries, yes, but not salaries that are 100 times the median salary of a full-time worker.

I also believe that the work done by an orderly in a hospital, the maintenance man in a local industrial plant, an educator in a local school is just as valuable to society as a CEO who earns anywhere from 10 to 100 times more. Time for physicians, attorneys and others to show a little humility. We all work hard.

Of course it is, Mr. Kennedy. We all have a stake, and a responsibility, in our own health care. That's why both the House and Senate bills place a big emphasis on healthy habits and disease prevention. They would be foolish not to. Preventable-- -- and high-cost -- diseases like heart attacks, strokes and diabetes are bankrupting families, businesses and our government. It is not acceptable to keep the status quo.
