Book Trailers ( a term trademarked by Circle of Seven Productions) have been around for years. It was in 2005-2006 that they really started to become more widely used. The YouTube and MySpace social sites paved the way for large scale distribution, giving each video a chance to be seen by thousands of people.
Of course having a trailer is just half the battle. To turn your trailer into a tool instead of a novelty item you must know what to do with it once you have it. Sending it to the top 10 video sites just isn't enough.
More and more I think people will turn to book video to help make their reading choices.

I've been on GMA so I've met Diane Sawyer and group.
I get to have breakfast with Alec Baldwin next month, along with a group of people.
I've met a LOT of bestselling authors; Christine Feehan, Lisa Jackson, Lisa Kleypas, LA Banks, Laurel K. Hamilton, Barry Eisler and so many others!
Who would I like to meet?
The guys from the tv show Psych. They've got to be a hoot! Weird Al. Lots of authors.

Microsoft....I mean....AOL....I mean....Amazon (they all start to look alike when you're examining ethics issues) is obviously trying to create a monopoly. Publishing houses should sit up and take notice as well. Soon, Amazon will be competing directly with them! And won't that be a sort of conflict of interest when that happens? I mean, is BN or Borders or BAMM starting a publishing business? No.
But Amazon has grown to cover so many industries that it now sees no boundaries to its outreach, not even those of ethics or conflict of interest.
What Amazon is doing it tantamount to book burning in my opinion. If you don't do what Guido...I mean Amazon...tells you to do, your book will be killed! Or at least severely maimed.
Amazon is not the only game in town. I would love to see someone like Borders or BN pick up PODs online. Let's all start buying for Fictionwise or some other bookseller that will print POD.
As long as Amazon does this I will not buy anything from them. This week I will have our tech guy take down all of the Amazon buttons off of our site.
We vote with our dollar. I vote that Amazon is being unfair. Vote "NO" on Amazon.

What a fantastic article! I totally know people like this.
I see 3 catagories of people all the time.
There are people who know things about themselves. They know they they have a problem or they know they know their own name (just an example here).
Then there are people who know they "don't know" things. They know they don't know how to fly a plane.
Then there is the third catagory, and this is where these control freaks often fall. *People who don't know they don't know*
These people are clueless about themselves and their behavior. They don't know that they don't know how to communicate well.
Someone has to tell them. Often that's how epiphanies are born! LOL

So true!
One thing I see a lot of are people talking and not listening. People blog, post, put up pictures and videos, etc. They get so caught up in putting their information out there that they totally miss that "interactions" part of promotions.
Using Google Alerts is so vital! Looking up blogs or Googling yourself is important too. Why? Because you need to know what people are saying about your book, about you, etc. When you respond you are "interacting".
I spend one hour every evening dedicated just to looking up blogs talking about book trailers. I then go there, read the blog and if I think I have something to share, I will post there. I am always polite, even if I disagree, and I am always relevant to the topic being discussed, not just inserting an opportunity to post/promote.

Book Trailers are just a tool and not meant to be an entire promotion for a book. Just like any other tool you have to ask yourself what work needs to be done and will this tool be effective in getting that work done.
Book Trailers are no more than a novelty item if all you're doing is putting on your site or making it for your fans.
If you don't have distribution for it that will reach readers and potential readers, why bother? Would you put a print ad for your book in a magazine for fly fishing if your book is about cars? Where you put the trailer is as important as what the trailer looks like.
Some trailers look great, some don't, a lot of that is subjective just as book reviews are subjective.
You need to state the goal of your promotion, then see where the trailer fits in, and then create a way to measure the success of the trailer in relation to your stated goal.
We have our trailers taken routinely by booksellers. We've been picked up by NPR and Newsweek Magazine. People are paying attention to book trailers. Why? Because they work. If they didn't we'd be paying for placement and not being picked up as content.
What you can do with it is as important as what it looks like.
As a side note, we're able to track number of views, comments, etc. but we are also able to see who the viewer is, man/woman, what age, where they live, etc. Anyone in marketing can tell you that getting that kind of information is invaluable. So, not only do we use the video as an ad, but we use it as a tracking device and a way to monitor the effectiveness of a marketing campaign. If the number of views go up during a specific campaign that is an indicator that what you did was effective.
You know what they say- "50% of all marketing works. You just don't know which 50%"
