Yes, Amy B, and it doesn't have to be a famous place or event. Sometimes just looking up at the second floor of a shop in a little town and spotting a bicycle advert from 50 years ago can set you off wondering.

Jennifer N, what a very thoughtful review. Thank you. In the spirit of one Victorian enthusiast to another, I'd like to take up the points you make about language. "Ass" is one of those words that has come to mean different things on each side of the Atlantic. On your side, I think, it's anatomical (as "kick ass.") On the Brit side, certainly in the nineteenth century, it was still a quadruped with long ears and "The man's an ass" simply meant "he is a donkey." ie stupid.

"Piss" is more difficult. I entirely agree with you that, in the mid-nineteenth century, a well-brought up woman would not use the word. But in the freer language of the Regency period, an upper class woman might use it. I see the 1830s as a transition period from Regency to Victorian, with a resulting uncertainty about language and morals. Which side of the line you choose is, to some extent, a matter of guesswork. Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed the book.

Thank you, Jennifer N. It's a difficult business juggling fact and fiction. I make a few rules for myself. Such as : try not to make any historical character behave better or worse than the biographical evidence about him or her suggests. But it's sometimes a struggle keeping to them

I agree, Beverley T. Perhaps there's not enough in libraries about women as adventurers and business people. I sometimes think that the women's movement has emphasised the historical wrongs done to women (of which there were many, of course) at the expense of remarkable things done by quite ordinary women. For every Joan of Arc and Florence Nightingale, there must have been hundreds breaking the boundaries in less publicised ways.

I agree about hats, Madame X. As a schoolkid, I had to wear one as part of the uniform and hated it very much. It took me a long time to realise that hats could be fun.

E.M. that point about Cosmopolitan and Maxim is a very good one, as well as an alarming thought. Yes, I think a lot of our perceptions of women in history have been shaped by male writers. There is also, I think, a class bias. In the nineteenth century, fiction tended to be written by, and read by, middle class women. With some honourable exceptions (like Elizabeth Gaskell) it had little to say about working class women.
