Anne, I'm so glad you have stayed at home with your kids. Hearing stories like this makes me thankful for my own mom. She made some career sacrifices to ensure my brother and I grew up in a safe environment. Thanks for doing the same for your kids. You are a really wonderful mom.

Wow, Connie. You have a boat-load of wisdom here. It fits perfectly with the class I am taking on how to be an effective helper/counselor. I just finished reading my online text and the topic was on active listening vs. poor listening. Your post fit in perfectly and helped me see some of my own mistakes. Thanks for your insight and advice.

I think the last two lines are the best. They have a powerful rhythm and use symbolic gestures/actions to convey the emotion of your character. In other places the imagery seemed more distant--like someone watching and describing something abstract, rather than a mother's heart throbbing with each sign of the coming departure. On the whole, you did an excellent job. Keep up the good work.

Hi Jack. Thanks for bringing up plastic grocery bags. A lot of stores in my neighborhood are now offering cloth bags you can re-use. Another idea is to use your plastic bags over and over. That is what my mom does.

Hi John. You have a good point. We may not be able to stop the pollution problem. But is that to be our goal in the first place? I can't speak for you, but as a Christian, I am commanded to be a responsible stewart of what God has given to me. I need to focus on managing the resources He has placed in my life. Doing so will bring honor to Him. That is my goal.

Hi Danielle. I agree. As Americans, we hould know this. The other day I heard a statistic about how few people know who wrote the Declaration of Independence. It was under 50%. How sad!

Hi BERF. What you said takes a lot of courage. Discussions like this can get really heated. One thing I would like to add here is a quote from Patrick Henry, that he made in 1787 at the Philadelphia Constitutional Convention. I think it may add some insight into the whole "religion" "Christianity" and "Government" arena. He said:

"It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded not be religionists but by Christians, not on religion but on the gospel of Jesus Christ. We shall not fight alone. God presides over the destinies of nations. The battle is not the strong alone. Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! Give me liberty or give me death!"

Patrick Henry did not say that America was founded by a religion. America was founded by people. Many of those people were Christian, though they differed when it came to being Catholic, Methodist, Episcaple, Baptist or other. He and other people of his time realized freedom was necessary for each to live out his or her convictions. Incidently, that was one of the freedoms that had been repressed by England, and which encouraged many of the Puritans, Seperatists, and other Christian groups to come to America in the first place. They wanted to ensure their God-given-right to worship as they felt led--without compulsion to a dictating government led religion.

So in a way, I agree with you. America was not founded on "religion" and it would indeed be scary if we became a nation dominated by a religious dictator who tried to force everyone into a single mold. Jesus made it clear that His Kingdom is not a political entity on earth, but a heavenly kingdom. We enter through belief and repentance, not by external compulsion.

What a vivid description of rejection and the anguish of silence. I liked the way you balanced hollow empty sounds (like the coin dropping) with the thick silence afterward. Keep up the good work.

Hi Jodie. That was a neat story. I like how you taked on the little "lesson" on the end about not being burried by the "dirt" in our lives. We cannot always choose what happens to us, but we can choose how to react. Thanks for the reminder. Keep up the good work.

Hi Jodie. Looks like you have your hands full. I would just caution that "Rules without relationship equals rebellion". Rules might help, and you definitely need them in dealing with this young man, but rules won't solve the underlying problem. Dr. Randy Carlson has some practical step-by-step advice on family issues like the one your going through. Duck update: I just found out that the mama duck left her nest. No babies. Apparently a racoon or something got to the eggs. Some co-workers found broken shells in a rose-bed nearby. Later on that day she flew off for good. I hope she finds a safer place.

Wow. You and your husband have gone through a lot. I'm so glad you held on to your faith and each other for 30 years. My parents celebrated their 30th yesterday. They also had a lot of ups and downs. She has struggled with bipolar, depression, and physical illness while my dad watched his own father get divorced and then die a few years later. Through it all God has been faithful. I pray that I will be able to endure like they--and you--have. God bless.

Hey Candy. Don't feel bad. She really is hard to see. She's down on the ground in the middle of the tulips. Look for a dark spot in the middle. That's her eye.

No. I didn't see the duck nest on the news. But as a kid I saw a program where Wood Ducks nested about 6 feet from the ground and had to jump out. The wierd part was that they were supposed to be nested like that. When the jumped into the pool of water below they bobbed back up like nothing happened.

Wonderful poem. It is comforting to know the Lord is our helper no matter where we go. I have often been comforted by His presence in tough times, and that truely is a blessing. Thanks for sharing this through poetry.
