I second that, Bent. I encountered that Big Nothing in meditation. It scared the hell out of me. Others who are more prepared seem to benefit from the experience, though.

I don't think "concerned" is the right word. I'm merely wondering how the kids process the experience.

I can't remember the time when I confused reality with fantasy, but I can remember that, when very young, symbols had a huge effect on me. At about age 4, I was completely freaked out by seeing a doll in a burned-out car, even though Mom assured me that no one had been injured in the fire.

Good question, Frank. The understanding among many ecologists is that the earth is an ecosystem called Gaia.

Ecosystems (combinations of the physical environment and the living organisms within) do have some resilience to recover to their original state after being perturbed. However, it's believed that once Gaia's climate passes a tipping point, Gaia will not return to its original state but will transition to a new state (probably less human-friendly).

(This is a gross oversimplifcation of two very complex subjects, but it's the best I can do here!)

The first poem is a beautiful allegory for life. It reminds me of Vishnu's dream. According to Hindu mythology, we're all just characters in the dreams of the god Vishnu.

I wonder what's going through the minds of the kids when they take part in this ritual. I see some really young kids there, perhaps at the age when reality and make-believe are blurred.

This reminds me of the scene in Lord of the Rings when Aragorn sets the war-weary horse free. No doubt animals can suffer from PTSD just like humans.

We ecologists are coming to accept the fact that the world is turning into one big ecosystem, arranged by latitude (most invasives come from similar latitudes). Humans are eliminating most dispersal barriers.

Kudzu root is used as a food thickener in Asia. Zebra mussels are a bit small for food, but they have been shown to be effective water filters, able to clean polluted areas so that larger fish can survive.
