Nora, you may do as you wish. Tell 'em I said so. It's still a free country. Anyway, aiming is over-rated when it comes to shotguns in close quarters, as your husband suggested. This particular 51 year old former pistol competitor will just call 911, and maybe toss the cats at an intruder. I may even shout, "Nora, load the shotgun!" though that might require some explanations to my wife.

Vern, Hiking is free. There is a parking charge, and one can pay by the week or year for a permit that is good for all the surrounding National Parks (or a National membership to all Parks would work). There is also a charge to ride the tram, if you want to ride it, but it isn't necessary, though it does provide handicap access (so it is necessary for some); also, some hikes require an extra 6 miles if you walk all the way to the trailhead vs. taking the tram.

So, if you ride a bike there, you can hike for free, or you can hike for just the parking charge. I would say that it isn't far from town except that town has expanded to the outer edges of the mountain range, so it may be very close, depending on where you live or stay in Tucson. Lots of people run on the road that the trams use (which was open to cars when I was a kid), and bicycles are allowed on the road at certain times (typically early in the morning): the road is very narrow and winding, with almost no "sight distance", and there are quite a few WPA-built bridges over the creek that are even narrower than the road (recently rebuilt/refurbished after the bad flooding of perhaps 2 years ago).
