There is no doubt that article marketing work, keep your articles unique and you will have a greater chance of success, but that does not mean that you should only have unique content on your site, some duplicate content is ok. But the best is always to add some sort of commentary or intro to every article you borrow from someone else..

There is a lot of people and companies using out dated techniques to promote their sites, most often it results in that the site will be looked at as spam instead of a rising star.

Nice point. That is also the fact for many other websites out there regarding all kind of guarantees and certificates they put on their site, most often they do not qualify for anything, they just find some nice pictures with text that looks good and publish it on their website.

It could also be good to keep in mind that you should concentrate on popular directories and think about quality instead of quantity, many new directories are full of junk and will never get any PR or get promoted in any way so they just turn out to be dead sites. So don't spend your valuable time on them.
