Your experience is not unusual. Although it does not proves as much, it suggests that there are some people who have an as-yet-unidentified brain problem which the medication treats, much as insulin treats a problem with the pancreas.

Dear Mariana T.---Of course there are many roads up the mountain and the alternative therapies you mention can indeed be quite helpful for some people. For those for whom nothing else works or who are not so anxious about pills, medication can be very valuable.

Barbara--As difficult as it can be, YOU should be the one who chooses who you want to see. If anyone finds they are not comfortable with a treater it is within thei right to look for a new one, regardless of insurance coverage.

Dear Sheryl O--Your mother is likely afraid of being labelled as "crazy". I also wonder if she had a parent who had a similar problem and she is afraid of being like that person. Sometimes it helps to tell the preson "I don't think your crazy, but..." These are hard situations to deal with.

You might want to have your daughter look at a book such as The Anxiety and Phobia Workbook or 10 Simple Solutions to Panic: How to Overcome Panic Attacks, Calm
Physical Symptoms, & Reclaim Your Life. These self-help approaches can be enormously useful.

Whatever works! You are fortuante not to have panic disorder, in which the attackes come more frequently and severely. There is no doubt that exercises, both cognitive and physical, can help with the symptoms you describe.

Rachel--your story is an interesting one....depressions differ, and the one you went through was able to yield to a bigger life stress. This doesn't always happen. Sounds like you also learned some coping techniques which have continued to be useful. Glad you're healthy!

Dear Donna--certainly there are many ways to treat depression other than medication or DBS. Sometimes tackling the stressors themselves helps, and sometimes different talk therapies can do the trick.
