Hi Renda. A lot has happened since that article, which I wrote about a year and a half ago. Our Women's Memoirs site is growing leaps and bounds. We do a couple interviews with authors every month and post the recordings. We have writing prompts, guest blogs, KitchenScraps and more.

Your points are very well taken. Leaving a legacy is very important to those we leave behind...especially to those not yet born. One thing I might add. As I work with memoir writers, everyday people with very personal stories, I'm taken with the importance of our stories and what they can teach the world at large. Every story of challenge, failure met face on, love, etc. is instructive and potentially inspirational to absolute strangers. You don't need to be famous to write a memorable memoir. I join with Nancy in encouraging you to share your stories...who knows, you may have a profound impact on a life.

I agree with Tracy, you paint a great visual image of poor Dorothy's Parkinson's Disease. Very visual. Amusing without being hurtful. She suffers quietly...you fear for your own life and limb. Great imagery. I like too the way you transition from the eager good girl (the true child of God) to the reality as presented by bishop and your actual experience in the font. Good stuff.

You sort of leave us in the middle of your experience...but I wouldn't call this a case of letting the air out of the tires. You've set up so effectively and we are left in a daze staring out at the small congregation right along with you. I think you've said it all without actually making any overt comment. Interesting piece.

Tracy, you may be continuing to work/rework your ending, but I love the direction. You provide so much more insight into your family, and we appreciate even more Aunt Jean's impact on you. This is a much richer story and a true memoir vignette now. Good job.

We're happy to have as many questions as people wish to ask. I know from experience that many people hang back...they're afraid to ask a question for fear of seeming dumb or uninformed. But there are no dumb questions...only dumb answers. And while the call is live, we will not take questions on the call. This is an interesting question in large part because I haven't given much thought to my formal outline training in a very long time. I think that the last time I adhered to the technique of note cards to outline to text was when I wrote my Master's Thesis. I still have the little steel box of colored note cards somewhere.

I don't use an outline, but I do organize my thoughts. When I'm writing nonfiction, I usually start by listing my chapters (I do remain flexible enough to change these chapters later, if needed). Then under the chapter sections I start listing ideas, sort of free association. I go through all my notes (word files dedicated to subjects) and I move the chunks of pertinent text under the appropriate chapter head.

As these notes become robust, I break the one Word doc into multiple docs (one per chapter). This, perhaps, will sound cumbersome to you, but it works for me, and in the end notes and outlines are only about facilitating the work.

I believe the Big 3 deserve to survive but a lot needs to change. I don't believe we have the money bail them out or give them a loan. They are sitting on an untenable situation. It costs the "foreign" auto makers building in this country 1/2 of what it costs Ford, GM and Chrysler to build a car. Unions have their place. It's not a matter of hating them. But they are getting far more benefits after retirement than the rest of us. It's just not realistic. That's why labor and management need to work together to solve this and save themselves and their jobs.

The government has no idea how to run the auto industry or build cars, and they shouldn't try. They're lawyers for the most part. But they can work with auto industry and UAW to negotiate something that makes sense for both sides. The Big 3 shouldn't be thrown to the wolves. All sides need to use their heads and be resilient and work together to find a sensible answer. That's asking a lot but there's a lot at stake.

Amber, how did you take this shot? The foreground is so grainy...is that due to your photography or is this rocky beach? It's a very interesting technique. The same shot must be breathtakingly beautiful on a stormy day.
