Thank you for taking the trouble to comment on my view of the Bush Presidency, which was made in response to a Karl Rove assessment, which did not seem fully balanced.
At the time, it seemed that political discussion had become too partisan to be reasonable. My comment was an attempt to overcome that. It did not succeed.

I remember Dick and Jane--Scott Foresman as I recall--and the SRA books. Scott Foresman was near OHare and SRA was downtown Chicago. They were both customers of mine.

And I remember reading The Cat And The Hat to all six of my kids. And the Lorax,
too.

The cards were one of the entertainments we had to occupy the time TV occupies in kids' lives today. Just as the purpose of children's cartoons is to sell cereals and Transformers, etc. the purpose of trading cards was to sell kids Gum, Inc. bubble gum instead of Fleer's Dubble Bubble.

You're right about them being educational, too. It strikes me that kids were more literate then than now, although one of my grandsons often surprises me with the knowledge he's gained from Animal Planet and similar TV programs. They've led him to read about insects, reptiles, wolves and so forth and he knows more about them than any of us knew in what I stubbornly call "the good old days."

It was funny. At first my mother pretended not to see it, but it was much too close and far too vigorous to be denied.
I sensed from the way my mother squirmed that piano lessons would soon no longer divert me from shooting marbles and playing stoop ball and kept thinking, Kiss him again! Harder! Harder!

The only card I know of close to your description shows a feathered tribesman sticking a spear into an Italian aviator in a white linen suit during the Ethiopian War.
But your recollection is so detailed and vivid I'm sure it's accurate. There were several others series after the War, especially by Topps which bought Gum, Inc.. I wonder if the card you recall was from a Topps series.

The Horrors cards stopped around the beginning of 1939 and I don't recall any in which the Foreign Legion appeared. The Legion was a popular subject though and I remember comic books and Big Little Books that had stories about it as well as several movies.

All the cards stopped pretty soon after Pearl Harbor because paper was used in the War. They resumed after the War and the Legion was active in Vietnam and in Africa. Is it possible the card you recall was from after WWII?

Sorry, Marilyn. The only thing I have is the memories. There were no WWII scenes--only some touching on the pre-war compromises and maneuvers that went on about a month before the invasion of Poland in September 1939.

Lasting impression? You're right. Seventy years and the memories are still fresh.
As for deterring wars? Not even nuclear weapons have managed to do that.

Back in the late thirties we were still in the Depression and penny candy and most everything else was cheap. Hot dogs were a nickel, two doughnuts and coffee at Nedick's were a dime. PepsiCola's jingle, meant to gain market share from Coke went

Pepsi Cola hits the spot.

Twelve full ounces, that's a lot

Twice as much for a nickel too,

PepsiCola is the drink for you!

Nickel, nickel, nickel, etc.

I thinks Topps baseball cards replaced Gum Inc after the War. (I'll check that.)

I'll have to write more about the Horrors Of War cards. They were really interesting and very high quality. There were over 280 of them.

The guy in the article was Charles Finley who damaged baseball.
Bill Veeck was a baseball man who lost a leg in the Marine Corps during WW II. While he owned the Browns, during the second game of a doubleheader against the Tigers, he put in a pinch hitter named Eddie Gaedel who was three feet six inches. The umpire stopped him but Veeck showed the umpire a contract he'd sent the commissioner's office while the commissioner was out of town. The umpire had to let him hit. Veeck told Gaedel he'd be sitting in the stands with a high-powered rifle and would shoot him through the head if he tried to swing. Gaedel, with the number 1/8 on his back, walked on four pitches, the Browns put in a pinch runner and that was Gaedel's only at bat. The commissioner canceled his contract next morning and Gaedel has an on-base percentage of 1000, highest in baseball history.
While Veeck owned the Indians he put Larry Doby, first black to play in the American League on the team. Doby played thirteen years and was elected to the Hall of Fame.

He wasn't flaky. He was smart, unorthodox, relentlessly competitive, unscrupulous in baseball, though not outside of baseball and determined to win.
