We have Sarah Jane, a minor celebrity in our hometown because she appears in so many of my columns. We got our yellow lab at an animal shelter simply because we were in such pain from losing our Max (a Malamute-mix) on Mother's Day two years ago. Max got sick on a Friday and was gone by Sunday - we never knew she had diabetes.
Sarah Jane is 89 pounds; Max was 45. We are past 50 - actually, hubby is past 60, and it wasn't long before we knew we may have jumped too soon, but we love dogs and cats, so we adopted her.
I love Sarah Jane, she loves people, especially kids, loves other animals and has brought joy to our lives. (Also, a broken pinkie (me), and an empty spot where a tooth used to be (hubby) - )

Kathryn, this was hard to read, but oh, how true! The trouble within our families - it tears us all apart, and so often that it seems at times that the healing will never begin and take hold. Our relationships are held together by such a thin thread sometimes, and it's scary.

How old is Dutchess? We got our St. Bernard mix at a Tucson animal shelter, but that was back in 1986 (I think.) Cujo lived to the ripe old age of 16 and we loved every minute we spent with her. We pretty much got all of our cats and dogs at shelters, except for two kitties I bought at a pet store.

I thought Sarah the pup was big - but look at that Mastiff! Looks like they enjoy the snow as much as our doggy does - and we're due to get some more in the next day or two.

I love fiddling with photos and trying black and white or sepia, along with other types. This is the kind of photo that inspires poetry or a story of some kind. Way cool.

Here, kitty, kitty, YOWZA! If I'd tried that kind of photo, I'm sure my cat's eyes would be too shiny or some weird color - this is totally cool. Love it.

Thank you, Ron - and I apologize. I just opened this e-mail, and I hope it's not too late to submit my writing on Sundays. I write a weekly column for our local paper, and wondered if something along those lines would be OK. It's sort of a family-pet-retired husband-in-laws kind of column. Of course I was thrilled to see that poetry is accepted too, so I'd like to submit that as well. Is there a limit on how many pieces (not that I'm that prolific, just wondering.)

Thanks for posting this, Kathryn. Sadly, my mom tried to teach sis and me to be prejudiced against anyone not white, and for me it had the opposite effect. Sis became afraid of others, and no matter what I said, she simply couldn't shake how she felt. Then, she married, had a daughter and before long, sis became a grandmother to a child who has a black father. She loves this girl with all her heart, though the man who eventually became her stepfather does not share my sister's love. Turns out sis is no longer afraid, and she can clearly see the person she used to be.
