The Fed was intent on saving the stock market after 9/11. So they cut rates to basically zero. What followed? A real estate bubble. Then we get to 2005 and they figure they have a problem and raise rates 17 times. They popped the bubble summer of 07. But wait! Now we have to go back in and lower rates again back to close to zero to save real estate and stocks...again. Maybe it works. However, the severe penalty is inflation and a worthless dollar.

The government should not be in the retirement account business. FDR is gone. It's not the 1930s. Everyone needs to grow up and take responsibility for their actions with their money. The whole thing is a disaster kept in motion by politicians who scare people into voting for them. Clearly, I have no opinion on the subject!

Risk is life. Take too much and you can go broke. Take too little and 'average' is your destiny! Worrying about making money in all climates is a wise discussion though. Kudos.

No one knows, but even if there was a recession that certainly doesn't mean there will be a lack of money making opportunities. Worrying about a recession is a group think fear. A flexible plan for making money in all climates beats a recession.
