Nasr,

I agree with the religious diversity point about Muslim-majority countries. But those nations did not have secular government (except for Turkey in the 20th century). I think the idea of secular government separated in large part from the religion is the stumbling block here.

In the West, the split between Catholic and Protestant as well as the varieties of Protestant provided most of the diversity.

It cannot be. It took Western culture hundreds of years. It will be faster for the Muslims because of our having preceded them and they can learn from our errors, but it will take generations.

Islam is a religion very similar to Christianity. It has the same roots in many ways. It is neither a religion of peace or war any more than Christianity is.

But you must remember that the Muslim peoples have experienced a culture that far removed from the industrial based economies of western Europe. If we go back 300 years, to a point at which the industrial development of Europe was just beginning you will find that the Christians were just as likely to react violently at any disrespect to their religious "icons." In fact, one could be killed for having the wrong beliefs.

So don't condemn Muslims for the way they react to insults and affronts to their most important religious figures. It is quite natural and reasonable for them to react as they do. They have not been exposed to the diversity of beliefs and faiths that we have been so lucky as to know. They have not had the variety of experience that we get from our mass media through TV and movies. Give them time. They will learn.

What would it have cost us to give those 6 million $1000 a month in 2009? That would be six billion dollars per month times 12 months or 72 billion dollars. Just one tenth of the bailout money for the bankers. I wonder what would have happened to that 72 billion dollars. I'll bet it would have been spent each month increasing by 6 billion the amount of consumer goods and services (rent?) that were sold. I'll bet that six billion would have been spent several times before it reached those same bankers in the form of deposits and mortgage payments. I'll bet that it would have meant jobs for thousands of people.

What good did the 700 billion bail out do for our economy? Which investment would have provided more boost to the economy? Which would have improved more people's lives? Which would have required less borrowing from China?

Hitler was a Christian and the Nazi's were almost all Christians. You would have to count their persecutions as similar to the Inquisition.

This is how one is able to judge politicians, using their own words. You don't have to believe what anyone else says about them. You can pay attention to what they actually do.

Of course those like Cheney make it really easy.

I have read the whole post. I agree with its findings and its depressing implications for our future.

There is a solution which benefits everyone, even those rich monopolists. It both brings back our choice and allows the wealthy to retain their power and wealth.

More alcohol also removed the hangover. I have read studies that indicate that this is preferable to "cold turkey" the next morning. That it actually is better for the health.

Of course the best "cure" for a hangover is to not have more than two drinks per day.

Marilyn,

If the Republicans have been offering solutions for years why do we still have the problem? The Republicans controlled all of the Federal government for at least 6 years there. Why did they not put in place solutions for these problems? So far as I can tell their actions only made things worse.

I can't believe you think Obama wrote the "health care bill." I don't remember his advocating any of that pork.

Why were there all those lobbyists working Congress if Obama was writing the bill? Why did the health care industry make all those contributions to election campaigns of congressmen if Obama was going to write the bill? Why has there been all this posturing and pontificating in Congress if Obama was writing the bill.

Wait until a bill is passed (which hasn't happened yet) and if Obama signs it THEN hold him to blame for approving it. In the meantime, you should hold the health industries to blame since they control Congress on this issue.

Randy,

You never got a job from a rich person investing to make a profit unless that person thought it would return more than they were spending. You never got a loan from anyone who didn't think they would get more money back as a result.

It is always the customers who pay for everything. The rich already have plenty of money to invest. They just don't see how investing that money in hiring people will get them a profit. If the poor are spending, the rich will see all sorts of ways to invest in hiring people to get that money from the poor.

What is the motive when companies are hiring? Profit. Where does that profit come from? From customers buying what the company has to sell. When does the company hire more people? To increase production in the expectation that there will be customers to buy the product.

They do recruit for graduate school and they do offer full ride scholarships for the top science students. Also there are science competitions in which teams of bright young scholars do real experiments and demonstrate their skills and knowledge.

Of course they don't need special admissions for their recruits. :-)
