Following is a comment to this piece by a former UK citizen:

"I read your link and in principal agree. I'm ex-UK and much as I grumbled about the system there I now realize that I was wrong, I now know a system much worse. People who are seriously ill get treated just as fast in the UK as in the USA (actually a little faster because they don't ask for an insurance card before treating you!). I get to see a doctor in about the same time in the USA as in the UK. But in the UK if I lose my job I don't lose my healthcare or get asked to pay $750/month when having no money is one of the problems of no job! In the UK I don't lose my house when I lose my job, the government ensure you have a roof over your head.

All that's necessary is to put the safeguards in place to prevent people milking the system by having 10 kids and living on welfare."

I joined Gather to learn from those of who have something to offer and, hopefully, to contribute to an exchange of ideas. I can appreciate sophisticated political humor, but this discussion was just bathroom talk that one would expect from a five year old. Apparently, you have lightened up a bit too much on newspapers and books.

Thank you Deb, for a superb article. One would have thought that since the discovery of penicillin those many years ago, science would have developed something better, more targeted. Antibiotics are a scattergun approach to infection.

The destruction of flora during antibiotic treatment is only the visible tip of the iceberg, we shall learn more regarding long-term problems in the future. Antibiotics are useful tools for physicians, but they are used much to indiscriminately.

AARP seems more like a commercial enterprise than a benevolent organization. There is no reason that any sensible individual should judge any services that they sell any differently than they would any other business. Senator Grassley would be well-advised to look into the contract arrangements that AARP has with the purveyors of services that are carried under their name.

Congratulations, Elizabeth, you did more than your share to bring about this momentous occasion. However, the Obama victory is only the first step. The “Money is speech.” crowd must be the first thing to go. There can be no serious change until the money corruption of Washington is eliminated. Equally importantly, those government officials who committed crimes during their watches must be brought to justice swiftly if the US is to achieve respectability and credibility internationally. And, we must always remember that huge numbers of our citizens have voted for the status quo. We must work hard to convince them that our ideas are fairer and work better.

Thank you for your interest. I'm impressed with your rare ability to brush away the nonsense and see the vital issues. Myths do not die easily; most Americans find it anathema to think that their country is actually very different than what they were taught about it in school and by the main stream media. The situation may produce "patriot citizens" that the established rulers approve of, but mediocre human beings.

There were 19 other viewers of my piece. Obviously some must have had an opinion one way or the other. It is very probable that on a subconscious level, they recognize that it can be risky to associate oneself with such counter establishment ideas, as factual as they may believe them to be.

I think that Felix's comment came closest to what we should strive for; not necessarily long life, but good quality of life. Medical science can keep a mindless carcass alive almost indefinitely. I have known poor souls who had long lives according to the calendar, but had died years before. Society should allow individuals to decide when life no longer has meaning and determine the time for their final exit.

It is fine for minorities such as stockholders and corporate executives to make all decisions when developing widgets for sale to the general public. Ultimately, the public decides whether to buy or not to buy. It is quite different for essential services such as health care, energy and transportation. These are vital services that should not ever be left to private profit-making entities alone to control. Recent economic events should be ample evidence that our total free enterprise system has flaws that are in desperate need of major revisions.

For me, Elizabeth, in addition to your well-stated observations, I think that one must take into serious account the history of an individual who is debating and carefully observe body language. The human brain is quite deft at lying, the human body is not. Obama is a rather self-made individual who has made his own way, and therefore, would have an understanding of the plight of ordinary people. It seems to me that this has been well demonstrated in his open stance and his ability to look at everyone in the eye.

McCain, on the other hand, has had everything handed to him from birth. His existence has been maintained by a military that is actually an island of socialism within a capitalist state. I would guess that in addition to any investment income or wealth that he may have married into, his life has been taxpayer supported. Not having ever had to think about food and shelter, he cannot relate to ordinary people. His dismissive body language and lack of eye contact has demonstrated that he has a disdain for people not of his ilk.

This is an individual who is not just out touch with ordinary Americans; this is an individual who has never been in touch. But the most important thing that voters should consider is that this is a person who loves his military elitism and, he will find it difficult as president to accept concepts beyond the framework of his life. In other words, this is a dangerous man.
