I have an MBNA (now Bank of America) card I use for ordering online. It's got a feature called 'Shopsafe' that lets me get a temporary number to use for shopping online. I can set the credit limit and exp. date. So if I was ordering something that cost $53.95, I give that number a limit of $55. I can cancel that number after the sale is done. I never have to give out my real account number online.

I've always heard debit cards can be a lot less secure than a credit card. I don't use mine too often so it makes keeping track of charges easier.

Seems like I heard recently that debt collectors can call your neighbors and ask them about you in an effort to embarrass you into paying your overdue bills. I forget exactly how that went - there was something they weren't allowed to tell. But the idea was to get all the neighbors on your block talking about you.

Good info... and be sure to check all 3 credit agencies. I have found discrepancies on mine several times. Sometimes one of them won't pick up on an account you've closed or paid off.

Thanks for the info on different companies offering identity theft insurance. You don't hear about that too often. I'm half paranoid about all my receipts and paperwork but that still won't stop a determined thief.

You're right about nothing being as private as we think. I think even if you're using a cordless phone in your house, your conversation could be picked up. I hope the policy of asking for socials stops - that's just not necessary.

Thanks for the heads-up on that phishing expedition. I get emails about 'my account' too - except they're usually from a bank that I don't have an account with. These thieves just mass mail stuff like that and hope some of it sticks.

I also use just one certain email address from my ISP for banking. Then if I get an email about my account at another address, I know it's not real because they don't have that one.

Is she still getting a statement that shows the purchases? or track them online? Sound to me like the bank of that credit card is really dropping the ball. I think she should cancel her account with them immediately. Let us know if the FBI does anything!

That's an awful lot of fraudulent claims - 45,000! Thanks for writing about this type of identity theft. Most people wouldn't think even the IRS could be duped. I'm reading this a bit late for tax season, but I'll be sure to remember for next year.

I saw a full page ad in the Wall Street Journal for LifeLock with the CEO's social security number in HUGE letters. If he's confident enough in his company to publicize it like that, his program must work.

Many people pay someone to clean their house or groom their dog when they could do it for themselves. This isn't really any different than that and you have one less thing to remember to do!
