yeah.. but its not so much about 'more fish in the sea'.. its about them being hypocritical. they talk about people being more authentic, having more integrity, being better to others... but they do this kind of thing. It frustrates me.

I think it's the other way around -- free speech is drowning people's sensitivities. While I believe it's important for people to express themselves, at many times people prioritize that at too great a cost. When we speak the aim is to communicate something -- to ignore sensitivity is to undermine your own purpose. Often times what happens is that people DO neglect to acknowledge the reality -- even the need -- for sensitivities and sympathies, and go about saying whatever they think or feel at the moment. What is freedom of speech if it is hindered by recklessness and thwarted by ignorance? I know it's terribly unpopular to think that people should be edited sometimes, but whether we acknowledge it or not, we edit ourselves and others all the time. Sensitivity is part of humanity, and it shouldn't be sacrificed so that people can feel more at ease and be more careless with how they represent themselves and their ideas. Make no mistake, don't think I am advocating mass censorship or anything of the like, but if we look to ignore sensitivity completely and champion 'freedom of speech' too much, we will become more and more self important individuals, less and less cohesive in community, and I would think after some time, a little less humane.

last semester at the college I attend, we had a viewing of this film followed by an open forum (which was an event also open to the local community to watch and participate in). I am a student at a private Christian university studying youth ministry, and I was livid as I watched this. I was angry because it was a true portrayal of fundamentalism, and it was in every sense, as you mentioned, indoctrination. The home-schooling about the non-existence of global warming and discrediting science and the scientific method only angered me more. I was actually so disturbed during the scenes of those emotional and outright indoctrinating services that it made me physically sick to watch. The Ted Haggard part made me laugh out loud at the irony. That summarized it all right there. It made me realize what a job I have before me, having to swim against that fundamentalist current in order to show people that not all Christians are that ignorant, and that youth ministry in particular should not look anything like that.

I'm glad that you wrote this article and to see what yet another person thought about it. I agree, it was a frightening scene.

thats a cute picture. Its like, you could see that guy making the same exact face 20 years earlier as a toddler. there are some things that dont really change.

1. about 3 weeks.
2. 818 gather points to date, I havent redeemed anything
3. I have received one $20 gc for inviting 5 people to gather. that was cool.
4. you have to earn at least 3000 pts a month to make any cash.. and basically its 3000 = $50, and I think you get cash in increments of $50 (so if you get 6000 pts in one month, you'd get $100 and so on.. ).
