The first thing I missed when we moved from a tiny mill town to Charlotte, NC was the mill whistle at 3 pm, 15 minutes before we left school, back in the day when a sixth grader was expected to walk half a mile (no snow either way!) to school in a safe environment.

There was a silence to that mechanical noise that is now covered over by the constant din of TV, Radio, people yelling to their cellphones, boombox vehicles and and ever present hum of vending machines and fluourescent lighting. I miss the silence of the background noises. It is good to be remember how it was.
