One thought I have... pesto depends on oil as well as cheese and nuts. What if you substituted (in part) an Asian-influenced oil such as sesame or chile oil (or some of both) for the traditional extra-virgin olive oil? I wouldn't suggest using another oil exclusively, as it a) may not be of high enough quality and b) might very well be too strong in high concentration, but a touch of it might well be nice.

Another variation I have heard of is to use cilantro in pesto - in some cases instead of basil. I wouldn't be able to eat that myself, but I wonder what a combination would be like - again, using the cilantro as an accent instead of a main flavor.

I think it's the height of arrogance to assume that we're the only intelligent life in the universe. The conditions that allow life to develop are not unique to Earth. However, life may have evolved differently elsewhere, and it may be far enough away that it will take centuries for it to find us or vice versa.

The other example you hear a lot over here is from a woman who is a Canadian citizen and supposedly was told she had to wait six months for an operation to remove a brain tumor that would have killed her. The truth is that she had a nonmalignant cyst that was not life-threatening, so no part of the scaremongering in the ad is actually true.

I hope so, Shannon. It's very easy to demonize something that you only hear about in the abstract - but when you have it personalized it's different. Unfortunately the only way that's been happening so far is advertisements that have distorted or lied about the failures of these types of systems.

The problem with "the government staying where it belongs and leaving health care alone" is that it's already in the mix. What is the VA, what is Medicaid, what is Medicare, if not government-run healthcare? Are you advocating that these programs should be discontinued?

Far too long. I've been away from Gather for a bit but getting back to it.

You bring up another good point - the commentators (including certain Tories) who'd like to vilify the NHS make it appear as if Britons have no choice in health care, when in fact, just as in the US and as it would be under the national plans being proposed, the universal option would be exactly that - an option, not a requirement by gray, faceless bureaucrats.

The infuriatingly stupid thing about the "Stephen Hawking" quote was that it indicated how devious some commentators are when it comes to their points. The writer deliberately chose to ignore the fact that Hawking is English, has lived in Britain almost all his life, and that he would not be alive were it not for the NHS.

It's easier and more effective for the right wing to lie than to address the actual issues.

It's depressing that so much of our entertainment industry these days seems to depend either on remakes of existing properties or on the transformation of successes in one genre into another, as with the current crop of Broadway musicals, a great many of which are nothing more than movie adaptations. It seems as if it's getting riskier and riskier these days, at least for the major entertainment producers, to do anything original.

I don't believe that we go anywhere after we die, so my perspective on things is that what we do while we are here is how we are judged - and that judgment comes from those whose lives we are part of.

Living your life in fear of dying is, it seems to me, largely a result of worrying about what you're doing in it. If you take each day as an opportunity- or a series of them- to do the next right thing (whether that be to pick up the phone and talk to someone you're mad at, repay a debt you don't want to, or do something you're afraid of but know you need to), then you're less likely to have that fear build up.

Sparrow - I think this flavor combination would work well with chicken too - not so sure about fish.

Garam masala is a spice and herb blend used in Indian cooking. The ingredients vary from recipe to recipe, but usually include cinnamon, cumin and cardamom.

This sounds wonderful! I have a half pork loin in the freezer that I've been looking to use, and my in-laws are coming over next weekend, so this looks like a winner.

I love couscous, and it comes in all sorts of tasty varieties, but lately I've found that buying it from gourmet or health-food stores in bulk is cheaper than the packages. You can flavor it with herbs, spices and whatever kind of stock or liquid you want - use equal amounts by volume of couscous and liquid (e.g. 1 cup couscous to 1 cup stock).
