What a succulent discussion! I usually start with a brain dump, and quickly veer off into the ill-favored "edit as I go" mode. Sometimes I journal about the idea to get the juices flowing. I've learned to capture those volatile "brain farts" on whatever scrap of paper is handy when they burst fragrantly forth, lest they evaporate as quickly as the process for which they are named. If I have any related notes, I'll have those at hand. Sometimes I scrap a whole piece and start over. Sometimes I rework.

Do you get the idea that I don't have a set practice? Righto! Different strokes for different days and subjects.

Have y'all written stories about life in the pre-tech era when families ate together and had conversations? Write'm, post'm, ie-mail'm. Get'm out there and maybe they'll be read. Or do I mean red? Can the younger generation read standard spelling?

Seriously, since the advent of cell phones and Facebook, I hear from my children and grandchildren far more often, and I know my dad's okay on the other side of the country, because he forwards comic strips at least three times a day. Technology isn't all bad!

How about a text message to call people to the table?

My Canon Powershot 800 was wonderful, but it got stolen last month. I replaced it with a Nikon Lumix T-25. It has 10x optical zoom with image stabilization. The colors are fantastic, but I'm still having problems getting sharp shots with more than about 3X zoom. If your hand is steadier than mine, I think you'd love it! The distance macro mode is awesome!

I just finished writing a memoir, primarily for my family, about my life as a preschooler. How I savor the memories of sitting in my willow tree, watching the leaves wave in the breeze, poking at ant hills, and digging to China in the sand. I loved to color, have tea parties with my doll, and I taught myself to read well by the time I was five. There was no nursery school or even kindergarten for the daughter of a GI BIll student. There were no play groups or play dates either. I had my little sister to play with.
Nobody had to find things to keep me occupied. I was always busy with my toys, or practicing counting, or puzzling out new words in my books.

I'm deeply concerned that few children today are learning to entertain themselves or manage their own time, for the lack of opportunity to do so. This cannot bode well for the future of our country!
