Oh I don't know Sandy, after all I am a man and she is a pretty good lookin shiela. I'm not sure I'd kick her out of bed if she farted.

Although you would have to use a gag - she has the most annoying American accent I've ever heard - more whine than a Jetliner.

(((It's a man thing: Yes it is true that I hate everything that she thinks, believes, and stands for with such a visceral passion that the mere thought of it makes me want to vomit - but I'd still bonk her.)))

On reflection It's a combination of the glasses and moose eviscerating. It's a really heady mix.

I'm sorry Sandy but I think Palin is absolutely gorgeous. Better than Bush! Granted, as politicians they both suck, but as an aid for poor struggling satirists there is nothing to touch them.

You struck a chord within Gerry. I ran away from school as fast as I could when I was a teenager and then spent the next ten years with a huge chip on my shoulder relating to educated people. Having been brought up by an English/History teacher and a Mathematics Master I had a reasonable knowledge base even without formal education - but the lack of a piece of paper rankled.
So at age 27 I sat a tertiary aptitude test, scored in the top 1% and went to a brownstone Uni to study Anthropology and Communications. I loved every minute of it and cruised through Anthroplogy with a distinction average - but it also opened my eyes. Most academics are so smart they know virtually nothing.
During the years between high scholl and Uni, hitch hiking around Aus and living on the bones of my bum I was provided an education in 'Humanity 101' which is denied most University graduates. I found that even on commencement of my studies I had a far broader and well rounded education than most of my younger contemporaries. I really empathise with a great many of your thoughts regarding your father. I also empathise with your conclusions. I am proudly a polymath,. Although formally trained in Communications and Anth, my particular interests run to evolutionary biology, geology, historiography and (funnily enough) taxonomy. (Which is a good thing as a degree in Anth and Comm is a wonderful introduction to Unemployment.)
Metascience is a live and well already. It was the ambition of every 18th C gentleman to be a well rounded scholar and I have always taken my lead from Charles Darwin who had a degree in Divinity and changed the world by daring to open his eyes wider than most.

PS - I'm just limbering up for a bit of a blogging spree addressing a few of my favourite talking points (ie - the media, guns, the American InJustice System).
I have a few weeks off and the above piece was a bit of a throat clearing exercise.

(Yes I'm now in Lismore Carolyn - it wasn't the floods that sent me south but rather the crazy house prices in Mackay and anyway, a change is as good as a holiday.) And yes Carolyn, as with you, I am eternally flabbergasted at the American mentality relating to guns and gun ownership and this piece was prompted more by a vague hope that in an election year in which libertarian values seem to be getting an airing some Americans might revisit their views on a host of matters.

(We really are suffering from a failure to communicate with clarity when it comes to this topic because we are such very different cultures - the hosting of the Black Powder event passed me by entirely as I dismissed it as having nothing to do with the gun control debate at all.)

I am not intimating that Americans are anything but different from Aussies when I use the word 'alien'. It is not used as a derogatory term at all. ("Some of my best friends are Americans!!" tee hee)

Don't understand your point re aboriginal Australia. (Most of the original inhabitants of Aus were killed off by smallpox, influenza and poisoned flour rather than by rifles. )

I do enjoy your articles mate, the substance is always good and the threads interesting.
However (big word)
The real horror story is right there in the text:

And Cheney's company, Halliburton, the one he has options in and still receives deferred income from, had over $9 billion in cash and current receivables."

Why spend so much time concentrating on what might happen when the above obscenities are staring everyone in the face?

Do you really believe that a stockbroker works harder than a labourer?
You pre-suppose that wealth is entirely earned within a vacuum whereas we actually live in a society in which some people are more equal than others. The society provides the infrastructure allowing people to earn money and if you earn more than you need it is rarely because you are a harder worker, more often than not you have been economically privileged.

With an approval rating as low as 28% the Shrub has alienated so many voters that the GOP, even with the republlibot vote, will not win office again. And your Dem candidates seem reasonable.

Hiya Denny,
No mucking about in Aus mate, Rudd will be sworn in on Wednesday and intends to hit the ground running. He has a detailed plan for the first 100 days and it all sounds like pure nectar to me.
And don't be so down mate - the current climate and debate in your country is being dictated by the powers of nastiness and greed. At the coming elections you will be given a chance to throw aside this agenda entirely.
The new story will be all about different topics .
And of course the Dems find it difficult to debate cohesively when the agenda is being controlled by the Presidential Troll now inhabiting the White House.
But it will change. Have faith. I have faith in you and your like.
America will change - and sooner rather than later.
