I am fascinated by the love letters written by John and Abigail Adams, Diana. I wonder how this biography compares with Dearest Friend, another biography which came out a number of years ago.

Tom Hanks' HBO series based on McCullough's book was so well done, especially with Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney as John and Abigail Adams. Just the other night we were flipping through the channels and stopped on the silly movie, the Nanny Diaries. How fun to see Giamatti and Linney as a modern couple -- though that one is definitely not a love story!

Beef Bourguignon, adapted from The New Basics Cookbook, by Julee Rosso and Sheila Lukins, authors of The Silver Palate Cookbook. Their secret ingredients are pearl onions and a dab of red currant jelly. Instead, I use Welch's grape jelly. The color of Concords makes for a rich, glossy sauce and complements the Burgundy beautifully. This time of year, I can smell the Concords from my kitchen window.

I can't think of a better place to celebrate a birthday, Pam. My husband and I hiked down the South Kaibab Trail to Phantom Ranch in September, and climbed back up the Bright Angel Trail two days later. We went with our favorite hiking friends. It was the trip of a lifetime! And yes, it was wonderful to have a break from laptops, iPhones and the like. I've been meaning to post some photos, but have been too busy with work lately. Have a great time!

FDR's Solicitor General Robert H. Jackson told the National Lawyers Guild in 1938: “We too are founders… We too are makers of a nation… We too are called upon to write, to defend and to make live, new bills of right.”

Jackson grew up in rural Pennsylvania and New York and remained grounded in the ideals of individual liberty, justice, and fair play. He served as General Counsel for the Bureau of Revenue in the Dept. of Treasury; Asst. Attorney General in the Justice Dept's Antitrust Division; U.S. Attorney General; Supreme Court Justice; and the U.S. Chief Prosecutor of Nazi war criminals at Nuremberg, extending protection of human rights to people around the world.

I came across this article about "FDR's Forgotten Freedoms" just the other day. You may be interested in reading it.

Not disputing the numbers, Robert; unfortunately, they are right on. I just think that many old industrial cities are often painted with the same brush, when in fact they have character, unique neighborhoods, cultural attractions, and welcoming people. As your photos show, some, like Buffalo, are worthy of investment and visitors.

Erie, Pa. is another one. It, too, provided the setting for a major motion picture, though not the kind that will show off the region's beauty. Scenes from the soon-to-be-released The Road, based on the novel by Cormac McCarthy, were shot at Presque Isle State Park and stylized to look like a "post-apocalyptic wasteland." The film stars Viggo Mortensen, Robert Duval, and Charlize Theron. Reviews have not been so good.

Buffalo gets a bad rap, when in fact it is a quintessential American city. Blue-collar, yes, but the city is diverse and very much alive.

We love visiting the Albright-Knox Art Gallery where you'll find works by Andy Warhol, Jackson Pollock, Picasso, Chagall, George Seurat, and Dali; the quirky thrift shops and art galleries on Elmwood Avenue; and our favorite Vietnamese/Thai restaurant, the Saigon Cafe. The Talking Leaves, with two locations in Buffalo, is a thriving independent book shop not far from the Elmwood Bidwell Farmers Market, a great place to hang out on Saturdays. And then there's the city's wonderful architectural heritage.

I've been meaning to write about Buffalo, but our workload has kept me from posting lately. Your story reminds me that I will have to make the time someday soon!

I recently read a wonderful book by travel writer and PBS producer Rick Steves. It's called "Travel as a Political Act." In it, Steves talks about how international travel can help to bridge understanding, and how it can broaden your mind to new perspectives. Chapter 5, "Denmark: Highly Taxed and Highly Content," contains an insightful discussion on health care.

The system there is a hybrid between capitalism and socialism, but retains a strong sense of democracy in the true sense of the word.

"Rather than doing what's best for corporations," Steves writes, "the Danish government clearly looks out for the people's interests. The Danes say, 'If the government lets us down, we let ourselves down.'"

Priscilla, the book is a real find. It lists descriptions of more than 300 participating private gardens, and some public ones, too. Open Days are scheduled in 23 states from May through October.
