I think it's at least semi-autobiographical. Some of these kids who get taken in for training were orphans or from very, very poor families. Jackie Chan, at least, had a dad in real life. Not sure about the rest.

I have a bunch of those quarters lying around, as they're so pretty I'm loath to part with them. Hmm...since my husband will be attending a conference in Chicago this month, perhaps I'll use those quarters to track him myself...

A fast-moving snail? You'd think that was a contradiction in terms, but considering the looks and contortionist abilities of this critter, I wouldn't be surprised he's an alien masquerading as a common snail....

Great article! Too many writers use dialogue tags instead of 'beats' or body language. Your examples really highlight how effective body language can be. I certainly found myself putting different inflections on the same words. Excellent!

The attraction of quick meals is for those of us who either don't have the time or the inclination to cook a 'proper' meal but is too health-conscious to binge on fast food bought on the run. So the market is definitely there. Me, I'm such an atrocious cook I even wish they'd come out with a cookbook with recipes for blenders. But I'm probably blaspheming here...*retiring sheepishly*

Very true. No matter how capable/cheerful/healthy/wealthy/wise we may appear to the world, we all have our own demons to fight. It's easy to judge, but we shouldn't. All it takes is a little imagination and compassion.

Beautiful photos of an extraordinary site plus informative notes make this a photo-essay par excellence. I've been to Edinburgh Castle, but that's a town/city castle and Caerlaverock's setting really has a lot more to recommend it. I'll put it down on my list of to-visit when I next find myself in that part of the world. Thanks so much for posting this!
