Wait... you're trying to imply that throwing billions of dollars at the "Drug War" in order to toss countless harmless hippies in jail and line the pockets of drug cartels (through artificially increased prices) all in the name of imposing an unconstitutional, top-down approach to social/moral change might not be such a hot idea?!

Dr. Paul said it best to a belligerent, anti-drug moral crusader during his '88 presidential campaign: "The government can't make you a better person; it can't make you follow good habits. Why don't they put you on a diet? You're a little overweight."

In all seriousness, good article. If the bloggers are any indication of the general population, maybe the shrillness of Ann Coulter and Michael Moore will be relegated back to the circus side-show they ought to be.

Socialized healthcare does mean that everyone will be guaranteed the same level of care. However, that doesn't mean that said quality will be very high.

Unsurprisingly, our current prohibition turned out no better than the last one: a huge resource sync for little to no benefit. The government is missing out on huge opportunities for extra "sin taxes."

Whoever we elect next should swear a pledge to have no more "wars" on material things, tactics, or ideas.

Ann, regarding your scenario where a child shoots another child: any responsible gun owner with children will make absolutely sure that their kids won't have access to a weapon. Even beyond that, a responsible parent will disarm their children's curiosity by letting them handle unloaded weapons whenever they ask. By taking something off a mystical pedestal, the child becomes less interested. Measures like this work well along with rules such as "If you see a gun, don't touch it and tell an adult. You don't know whether it's real or a toy, loaded or unloaded" and update them as the child matures.

Ultimately, it comes down to a personal responsibility issue. Irresponsible people will do stupid things regardless -- whether it's allowing a two-year old to drink bleach, take the parking break off and hit another car in the street, or shoot his playmate. Try as we might, we can't regulate stupid.

In almost every state but Illinois, there is no such thing as a "gun permit." There are just the standard background checks, etc. It could just as easily be argued that everyone in New Hampshire is born with a "gun license." It is absolutely not the same thing as a gun-toting infant -- though that'd certainly put a new spin on "infantry."

If we (thankfully we don't) regulated free-speech or habeas corpus through licenses, someone objecting to a 10 month old getting either of these because the kid "can't speak" or "shouldn't be getting arrested, anyhow" would sound a little strange to me. The parents are just trying to reserve the child's right to exercise its rights later on in life.

The real problem for the middle and lower classes is inflation caused by overwhelming deficit spending. The treasury then prints the bills to make up the shortfall, thus devaluing everyone's currency. The upper classes usually play the market which is highly resistant to inflation and, therefore, suffer less if at all.

If you want to help people who are struggling to keep up with bills, throwing money at the problem to create MORE deficit spending isn't the answer. Get government out of welfare and start promoting local charities that have a better idea of what the real "front lines" of poverty require.
