It truly was bad phrasing on Sen. Obama's part (read his statement at the top of this page) - it was legitimate to use "apologize" - "acknowledged... inappropriate"...etc - and it was understandable to misunderstand his statement - he used the word "and" between the retirement clause and the acknowledgment clause, suggesting both. (And, he later said he had spoken privately with Rev. Wright.)

I respect all of you and your comments, but really Brian - this shouldn't be another reason for you to support him! ;-) And, as I stated in the article and reaffirmed in my comments, I believe that The View interview (hey, that almost sounds like when I had to report "In 'U.S.A. Today' today...) was not a good one for those of us hoping he can put the issue behind him.

I've now watched/listened to the ENTIRE interview (not just the part about Rev. Wright), at http://abc.go.com/daytime/theview/video, and I am willing to say that Sen. Obama DID just phrase it badly. It DID give the impression (to many, in the media and likely those watching) that he had retired and apologized. But, that is NOT what he meant. I apologize that I wrote this article on the basis of the AP report without looking for the context.

That said, the first two points about his statement on The View remain. I am sorry that he is moving around on this, even though I think he is honestly struggling with the issue. There are still too many people who might support him if he satisfies their concerns.

Could be, Carol. I based my guesses just on what I've seen/heard (body language, speaking style). Not fair, and she does seem to be developing more confidence. She might have aspirations down the road.

Re: Clapton and Harrison: I was living in Tucson at the time, and had totally forgotten about that! Thanks! (Tucson was pretty cool in the 70's, what with that story, Linda Rontadt riding high, and Paul and Linda McCartney living (parttime) there.)

Stacey, your first sentence described it PERFECTLY for me, too.

I have heard bits and pieces of Ira Glass' show on NPR, too, and it is also a bit unsettling that it is not clear enough what his perspective on it is - I know his M.O. is to simply hold things up to the light, but I wonder if it is too subtle for too many in his TV audience. (I'm wondering what came before and after on the show - I'll probably go to check it out later.)

Jared: I can understand your frustration, but you should take me at my word. I am a reporter at heart and by training, I preach critical thinking of all media and of candidate's words, and I simply pointed out something that jumped off the page at me. The e-mail hit my in-box (because I donated some money to the Obama campaign for one of my kids who supports him, and because I will support him if he is the nominee), and it hit me as being misleading. I have criticized many of the Democratic candidates - including Sen. Clinton - at various times thru this primary battle, and have criticized Republicans, as well.

I understand that you wish to choose the topic. Unfortunately, there are many topics going on at once. My article was just a minor observation that was not designed to be a "topic" or to "change the topic".

I will say - and I am starting to formulate an article on this - that I am getting concerned about the dissonance between Sen. Obama's theme of unity/the high road and the shrillness/negativeness of Obama supporters on the internet. Your refusal to acknowledge my avowals, your refusal to acknowledge that Obama's campaign mgr is using statistics to mislead, and your insistence on dictating the topic as being Clinton's statements is a good example of that dissonance.

Here's a "remembrance" that was on NPR yesterday. It features relatives and friends of a few of those servicepeople who have died there. Much more affecting than other comments I heard/read yesterday.

It is about 4,000 more than it should have been, and it is a sad reminder of those young men and women who have given their lives. It also reminds me that the number of servicemembers' deaths is just a small fraction of the total deaths that have resulted from this war that could have been prevented.
