Beautiful Mike, and so very majestic in its presentation: of battles fought and won, of the weaker looking for guidance and strength. I think there needs to be a comma here: "Their strength, they are competing for your love." You rhyme so effortlessly; this is an art!

Kushal, both poems are splendid, but I especially love the first one. I don't feel as if it's that sad; it sounds peaceful, with light, birds, and the way shadows play on walls. These are companions, too. Because he can still see, and the light that fills his eyes cannot all be filled with grey.

Thank you so much, Adrian! That's a beautiful compliment, and means a lot to me. I want my writing to be available, intelligible, and not overly obscure, and it takes fine readers to keep me grounded. : )

William, that's a VERY sophisticated reading, and you're absolutely right. : - ) I thought I was sometimes being overly subtle without meaning to, but you picked right up on it.
It's the story of a divorce (out of a marriage that was a type of war), juxtaposed with the returning soldier who comes back with the scars (as did Catullus), to find the remnants of love. Thank you so much for reading!

Funny you should mention that stanza! That was a late addition to the poem, added about a year after I wrote it. It haunts me, so I keep coming back to it. My nephew told me that of al the ones he read, that was his favorite.
I had pulled all of my poems down, because I thought I would have more time to submit them to journals, prepare a chapbook, etc. But I don't have as much time as I would like, so I think I'll re-post them for now!

It's not the schools, it's the school boards! Luckily, I live in an enlightened city where the kids read "Moby Dick," too. I loved "Moby Dick," and really loved "Billy Budd."
I work in higher ed, and the statistics on K-12 and the quality and content of the reading has slipped a lot in the past 20 years. There are a few brave souls who still crunch the numbers to tell everyone what they don't want to hear!

They actually pulled this one from the libraries in Fairfax! A less enlightened area of Northern Virginia, to be sure, since some right-wing nuts got voted onto the school board!

Aha! I knew I had seen that one! Our elementary school library had it! Back in those says where such things were actually placed into libraries for children to see.

Oh, the prompt! Most of the poems that I write about music are all about that major passion. I'll have to think about a minor passion, which seems like a contradiction in terms!

Happy anniversary to you and Becky, Atticus! I wish you many more happy years together. : - ) I hope she knows she has her own fan club among your friends.
I love these books, and invariably, come across them to add to my small collection. Happily, collectors seem to go for other things, so it's wonderful to come across them these days. I have a few from my childhood, and we always loved the letterpress graphics, which look to a child as if they're all done individually by hand. My sister has some of the cookbooks!

This is so profound to think abut, I've been thinking about it all day!
I think more about what can be done to bridge the differences between people with art. It is a great leveller, it's something people can *see*, experience, and talk about. I try to not think of art as something that has to have a purpose, but to me, this might be its highest purpose. What do you think? I remember seeing the beautiful exhibit from the National Museum of Kabul, where most everything had been looted (since the idiotic Americans who were supposed to be guarding the museum didn't), but they found this amazing cache of gold, precious stones, and all sorts of artifacts. It almost breaks your heart, because these items were such miracles. So there were a bunch of good lectures, and people from all over talking about it. Borders are crossed and then disappear.

You put it so beautifully, that art still needs a conduit; it needs to connect to humanity not to be considered "art," but to be considered "human." I believe that "good" must be our humanity.
This is one of the best conversations I've ever had about art. : - )
