As I said in my article on Diversity and Peaches we all need to step away from our comfort zone. That is not to say that we need to enter into a confront zone or a conflict zone but we need to step out. Free speech is great as long as it is respectful of the listeners and the listeners are respectful of the speaker. Too often these days discourse turns into disparagement.

Wow - I just ranted for a moment and it looks like I hit a note that resonates. Than you to everyone for your comments. I particularly like the carbon footprint theme. I had not thought about that.

My first book is just coming out next week (May 21st to be exact), "Maps for Modern Magellans: Charts for Captains of Commerce". In a nutshell, it is an effort to put business basics in a new format to help people who struggle with their business and life. I try to be insightful without being professorial. When I started it I thought it would have 20 short chapters. As I received feedback to provide more detail the book grew so long that I split it. In the second volume, due out in the fall, I discussed unintended consequences. It looks like the carbon footprint of having what we want when we want is probably an unintended consequence.

The comments on the taste of fresh peaches are also wonderfully vivid. We have a white peach tree in our yard. While the peaches may not grow as large as the supermarket varieties they taste fantastic. It helps that they are essentially free. The next piece I am working on is a Modern Magellans Manifesto. In it I propose that we recall that green-space and self-sufficiency project power and provide a sense of peace and self-assurance that are important as we go through the challenges of life. I hope you'll read it and comment on it as well.

I am not advocating a big-brother type society but in the days when everyone knew everyone in town it was pretty hard to have things like this happen. We are now so desensitized to the feelings of others. This is why people are so rude in theaters. There is no penalty for bad behavior and anyone who complains is treated worse that the original offender. My 2 cents.

When he goes after the Duke Lacrosse accuser and the Duke faculty that violated the constitutional rights of the coach and players I'll be impressed.

Unless this rap protest happens every day until things change it was just a publicity stunt. I like Beck but his ratings were not great so I am suspect.

Most people think I am crazy but I can't stand Led Zepplin's "Stairway to Heaven" Perhaps it was just played to many times but I get a splitting headache when I hear it. "MacArthur Park", "Alone Again", " Billy Don't Be A Hero", and "Hollaback Girl" come very close to causing the same discomfort.
