I have been to Colleville, to the American Cemetary overlooking Omaha Beach.

The sight is forever etched in my mind - hundreds upon hundreds of graves, most for men in their late teens or early twenties.

JR, The German system too is "universal" but it is not, as of now, paid for by the government. Instead there are a whole battery of Health Insurances with different profiles. If you are employed, you are required to have health insurance. Your employer pays half and you pay half. You can choose which insurance to go with.

If you are not employed (unemployed, on disability etc.) you still stay in your health insurance and it is paid for by the agency supporting you - social services or whatever.

If you are an independent contractor or self-employed, as I am, you choose a private insurance company and simply pay. You could also not have insurance (which is a non-choice, as far as I am concerned...) There are physicians who do not work with the regular health insurances - so for them you either pay privately or you have private insurance rather than the kind where your employer is paying part of it.

We had American friends here some years ago, and one of them had a heart attack while he was here. We took him to the hospital - ICU, Stent - the works. He was in for 8 or 9 days. When it came time to pay, I was told that since he had no insurance and was a visitor to the country, they would charge what the normal health insurance would pay for the procedures he had had. It was about 5000 Euro.

I have also lived in Great Britain, with National Health - which is a government-pays-all system. You get basic care, and no one needs to die because they couldn't afford health care. There are also physicians who are private, not on National Health plans, and you need to pay them privately. So there is choice, if you have the means.

No matter the health care system set up, there will always be folks who are unhappy with it.
But it is not meant to take care of all wishes. It is meant to enable everyone to receive basic care, regardless of means. Those who have more means will always have additional choices - which is why I fail to see the problem. As far as I can see, all the folks who are unhappy with the health care system that is on its way into being implemented have some sort of means to get more/different health care on their own. And that choice is one no one will be taking away...

Dandelion leaves are healthy and tasty in mixed green salads! Add a bit of chopped egg and you are really rocking!
Just make sure to get them early in Spring, and where the doggies haven't gone...

Oh my Esther - this does not sound good at all.
I understand why you thought nothing of it - but if anything like this ever happens again - I am sure you will. I guess we all have to be more aware of strokes - it is absolutely crucial to get the patient to the hospital ASAP!
