All old religions in the northern hemisphere celebrate the anticipation of life again on the darkest day of the year. They generally do around the winter solstice (also around June 21, summer solstice for another reason) and equinoxes (planting/birth in animal husbandry and harvest).

Among the tribal clans of northern Europe several to a few thousand years ago (following the last ice age 10,000 years ago), many celebrated various types of ceremonies around December 21, often with dance around a green pine tree standing very alive-looking from above frozen, snowy dead-looking ground. It was a way to reconnect themselves to the cyclical sense of nature, that lighting a fire and dancing old rituals by such a tree on the darkest night was a way of rekindling faith that warmth and life would come, and "Easter" is filled with red colors on eggs to remind us of "birthing" and "virginity."

There's a lot more than space required for me to share the ancient practices that have over the centuries become assimilated into our large religions, including Islam and Christianity, including the Israeli celebration around the spring harvest, such as Festival of Unleavened Bread, dealing with passover and the sabbath.

It is false to assume that such holidays are without their inherently pagan roots. It would be a wonderful thing I think for these religions to acknowledge their roots in nature.

Graham, I honestly wish you'd look at that video set I gave you a link to above. It's very balanced, in looking at the debate

There truly is not that disagreement you insist exists among climatologists. The only point of real historic contention - also accepted by climatologists now based on new research and models by among many places, the Niels Bohr Institute - is the unexpected acceleration occurring with global warming and related issues, such as climate refugees and the US military predicting climate change to be the near future's greatest social destabilizers, leading to terrorism and war.

BTW, when I was a college student, this joke circulated the science dept.

I remember taking a college course ages ago, where the works of some of our best-known and lesser known sci-fi authors were treated with the same dispassionate analysis a work by Shakespeare and Longfellow were treated.

I think often there is a bias that occurs in gender differentiation during socialization, where sci-fi is often regarded as something exclusively for boys.

Denmark is just now celebrating its first "white"Christmas in a decade and a half. Some blogs in Danish are saying that the cold of recent weeks means global warming is not going on. Those who know the science of either climate change or the "denial" feature to human addictive patterns can only take a breath like you just did with a story such as this. For me to be able to write such stories is a privilege. I often don't feel I can own any of them since it is like I am merely a traveler, and thus an observer and chronicler, in the human collective unconscious.
