I have a question for you David, does the ability of the ocean to absorb CO2 change as it warms? Or as the ocean freshen and becomes less salty, does it's ability to hold CO2 change? A second question is related, don't the oceans expand as they warm also? It stands to reason that they would, and that's not taking into account the melting of ice shelves or either poles.

And none of this sounds good to me.

You questioned his honesty by implying that he might not be what he said he was. Maybe smear was the wrong word, how about impugned?

I really don't get what the big deal is, I thought that I asked fairly politely and explained that sometimes people misrepresent themselves online. I have debated creationists for years and they consistently claim to have degrees from non-existent universities or from paper-mills. As a result, I have become suspicious when people who make dumb arguments that I a lay person can see right through, then claim to have advanced degrees.

I wouldn't even care about that except that it goes to character and ends the debate real fast.

I agree that there are extremes on bother sides, that both corporate and environmental concerns are involved and that conspiracy theories are insane. I also don't think that a science fiction writer is the best person to get your science from. And... I still think that Real Climate, Deltiod and Stoat are good science blogs and contain accurate information.

Don't really have time right now Chris but one thing impresses me. You are the first the very first person who has taken the time to actually give an intelligent response to me. The very first.

Every single person before has replied with insults, lies and deceit. So you can pat yourself on the back and congratulate yourself for being the first global warming skeptic who hasn't treated me like crap because I dared to disagree with them. I put up with that for a while and then I decided to give as good as I was getting.

It has been very disturbing and I am somewhat embarrassed to have been part of such a ridiculous exchange.

You had plenty of opportunities for a different outcome. I've been practically begging you in this thread to post your informed and reasoned argument showing why my position is incorrect. You have not done so, why is that Adam?

It actually scars me to think that there are such twisted, hateful individuals out there and I can only hope that they stay in their own cyber-space world.

I return invective with invective because it's all you people understand. I think that the right miscalculated. They thought that we liberals would never fight back and they got used to being able to say and do anything. Like Coulter calling Edwards a faggot, like Maulkin defending US WWII concentration camps for American Japanese, like the constant drone of filth from Limbaugh and Imus and Hannity and the rest.

Only now we are fighting back. Not so much fun on the other end is it Adam?

Filth like Cassie are not staying in their own world. They are running the country, destroying our constitution, spying on all of us as we speak. Friends of mine have had them show up at their door, no cyber door Adam, a real one, with a baseball bat. People like Cassie are violent fascists and there is only one way to deal with that kind of slime. For too long liberals have brough knives to a gun fight when dealing with the right. Brenda, you need some professional help. If you feel that anything I have written is a physically, or sexually threat, then you have some serious issues.

I didn't say that and that you would claim I did is nonsense. I specifically said :"(not you specifically, but by other wingnuts here". I am talking about Cassie's sexually violent comment here:

His/her comment is hardly the first of it's kind I have run into here. It is typical of your side of the GW debate and comments like Cassie's are why I aggressively argue from my side. Because taking "the high road" only encourages that kind of hate speech. The Authoritarians of the right, like you and Cassie, only understand one thing, force. If I tried to be polite and reasonable people like Cassie, who represents 90% of you, would only take that as a sign of weakness. That you would try to blame me makes you, as David said, a cad.

I suggest that if you want to salvage any self respect at all that you put as much distance between you and the likes of Cassie as you can. Can you Adam? Or do you approve of Cassie's behavior? I don't know you, maybe you like that kind of filth. This is your shinning moment to prove otherwise Adam.

That works both ways doesn't it? The reason that I am sometimes a little aggressive is because I have learned to be so from you and those who argue against global warming. All I have seen coming from your side on this issue here on Gather has been ignorance backed up with threats of violence. On another thread Cassie makes clear threats of physical violence towards those whom she disagrees with. It's fairly typically for your friends.

I have been physically and sexually threated by you and yours here (not you specifically, but by other wingnuts here). That is why my attitude is less than polite.

I see no discussion from you at all. You have presented not a single fact not a single published paper to support your position. In fact, you refuse to be pinned down and to state exactly what your position is. And as soon as David countered one or two of your arguments above you change the subject and throw up your hands and complain that nothing you say will ever convince us. You shift your argument when confronted with the facts. An effective rhetorical ploy, but it is not "rational debate".

Sounds like creationist debating strategy to me. Are you a creationist/ID proponent Adam?

Drop the "poor me" pose Adam, you're such a poseur. Be a man and state your best case, state it clearly and honestly. Provide facts and figures. I'm betting that is beyond your ability because when I look at your homepage I see nothing of the sort. I don't think you could handle a real and intelligent exchange of ideas because you run the risk that you might be wrong. If that's what you really want I would suggest Deltoid or Stoat or any of a number of similar science blogs. But I already know that I will never see your name there. There certainly is evidence that human beings and their "creations" - chemical releases, impervious ground cover, etc. - do cause global warming locally. However, the jury is still out as to what signficant role (if any) human beings' discharges/effects are actually causing globally (if at all).

Ummm.. actually, no. In fact that jury is in. Weird huh? But it turns out that increasing global CO2 concentrations to 33% actually has an affect on climate.

observations on other planets definitely suggests a strong possibility that there is a solar cause (at least in part) for warming on several planets in our solar system.

Wrong again Ronald. It's summer on Pluto.

BTW Chris W. it turns out that banning DDT was a good thing. Who knew that dumping something like Agent Orange would harm the environment?

I take that as a no, meaning that you do not have a degree in Geology from a University. In fact, I bet you don't have a post doc at all do you Adam? Did you even attend college? Or does your idea of "working geologist" really mean "I read a book once".

It doesn't matter that much to me what a person's credentials are. To me what matters is honesty and I would respect you if you were just an informed lay person as I am. You didn't do that, you claimed to a geologist when you are not. You are a liar. You present yourself here as a geologist when in truth you are a navy instructor. Your hubris is astounding. You call yourself a Christian and then you come here and lie.

Nothing could be further from the truth Adam. I am open to real debate over real facts. I get frustrated and angry when all I get instead is lies and deceit. So... Show me the published articles that prove that global warming is not happening . Show me the article that explains how increasing CO2 by 33% would not affect the climate. Show me the article that demonstrates that the sun is responsible for the warming of the Earth or even the other planets for that matter. Careful, I checked up on that last claim and there is no such article. The other planets are not getting any warmer than usual. On Pluto, it's summer.

My challenge still stands Adam.

However, I notice that elsewhere you have admitted that global warming is real and is due to human activity. State your full position for the record please. Best as I can tell it is that global warming is real, is caused by people, but is not a crisis and will only be 2-3 degrees and the we will invent our way out of it. Have I got that right?

As an American, I believe we should have allowed the market to handle this situation.

It did. It was the beauty of the free market at work. Imus offended his advertisers and they withdrew their support. If we are entering a new time where the racist hate speech of the right is no longer profitable I for one will be glad. Our country is better served by the free and open market and Imus' speech is still free. CBS won't be picking up his tab is all that has changed.
