I agree! I can't imagine what it must be like to have the pressures to "perform" all the time. I crash under the stress of normal busy work/family/marriage. How could all that power and money NOT change you. Human's are always changing and evolving. Perhaps her leaving is her way of saying, "time to evolve in a more meaningful and personal way"!
I doubt I'll ever know the pressures that much money/fame/power has. I think it must take on a life of it's own - hard to keep the ugliness down and under control!
Good luck to her and thanks for showing all women the responsibilities of fame and power!

I have never watched her show but respect all that she's accomplished. I'm not sure about the "church of Oprah" thing. She's just one of all of us really strong women. And I've scene people do worse things with all that money and power!

Isn't he great? I love Neil Gaiman too. He's so good for adults and the his YA titles are wonderful. He goes from creepy to really funny!

I love the system France has. Everyone (or I think 95%) have health insurance. It is required that everyone have it and is privately administrated. Docs have much more freedom to treat their patients and practice their field. Patients have much more freedom to choose their own care.

Most countries that provide medical help to their citizens make it none negotiable, you must choose to be insured.

Our country is so mamby pamby. Latest stats show that, although Americans are altruistic, it's only as long as their responsibility isn't affected. So goes the ME generation!!

True, not everyone is an audio type. I've actually found, though, that I read more than I used to now that I also listen to audiobooks!

I'm sorry Lady, I did misunderstand your meaning. For me, public image consists of so many things, first - how people see you with their eyes, then how they see you act, then - last and perhaps least - what you say.

I am very comfortable with who I am. My friends like me, my family loves me, and people feel comfortable approaching me.

As far as clout? I guess the only clout I have is how I exercise my buying power and in the privacy of the election booth. So, my clout is exactly equal to every other citizens.

Thanks for a really great discussion - it's why I love Gather more than then "others"! :)

I wonder if young people only get exposed to him because they have to memorize one of his poems. Really, is there a better way to turn someone off?

But his stuff is so scary and creapy without being so gross and gory. "Old school" horror as I think of it.

And I think reading it is fun, but having someone with a great grasp of the language and pace is amazingly scary!

What a bummer when you get no trick-or-treaters! Some years we don't get many but most years we get quite a few. Love to see the costumes, especially the little kids! Haven't bought any candy yet, hate to give out bad candy.

Also, when I say, best foot forward, I'm not saying - conform. I'm saying, when you go out, don't present yourself like a bum and wonder why people think you're a bum! Another thing I tell my daughter - If you want to have purple hair, then have purple hair. But don't wonder why some people judge you because of it, or you get lots of attention you didn't want. Don't whine - why is everyone looking at me?

Also, while our family units are primary in our thoughts, looking beyond to our community is how we create a community in the future. If I only care about MY family, than I teach my children that their neighbors and others around them don't matter much.

This goes way beyond how we are dressed but to our attitude toward others in the world.

LOL! I had a feeling my opinion might not be popular. I must be an old faht (as we say in Maine).

However, it is human nature to weigh non-verbal communication more than verbal. So, in your interaction with the lady next to you in line, she will recieve about 4 x more information about what you're saying than with just your words. Granted, specifically how we are dressed is only part of non-verbal communication. These are just the opportunities that present themselves to make the difference in other's lives.

We may hate human nature, but it is important. If I'm dressed in a way that says, "I don't give a rat's behind what anyone thinks", I will probably (subconsciously) use a posture and facial expressions that back up that communication. And people are much more likely to "hear" my words in that tone.

And I must ask, by setting the example of "I don't give a rat's behind what anyone thinks of me" teaches our children....what exactly? That it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks, only what I think?

Not caring what others think of us or anything else may be part of our problem in society.

I have not taught my kids to be superficial. I have taught them that self respect comes from the inside and is shown on the outside by our actions and how we treat ourselves. Right or wrong, people do draw conclusions about us based on what they see long before or if we get a chance to communicate any other way.

This may not count when we are walking down the street or at the drug store, but you never know when we will find ourselves in a possition to make a difference. Reporting a crime, helping an elderly person who's fallen, helping someone who's lost. By presenting our best, we are more likely to act our best. And human nature will most likely choose/believe the person who presents themselves with self respect.

And when we present ourselves with self respect, people will feel respected.

My mother taught me that people draw an opinion about you before they get to see you. It's part of non-verbal communication. When you dress like you don't care, people won't. If you are neat and present yourself with pride, you present something very positive.

Living in a society of "take me as I am" has taught teens and young adults that going in public with messy, ill fitting and unflattering clothes is ok. Unfortunately, they're not learning how important this style of communication is.

It's not superficial to look neat and like you care about yourself. After all, if you don't care about yourself, how could you possibly care about anyone else?
