Interesting piece about an interesting program. Perhaps that's why I've always felt so "at home" when visiting Africa. Even my wife, who is not an avid traveler, fell in love with it on our first trip.

The events in the Congo are so very, very sad. The greed driving the continual massacre is immeasurable. There's not even any pretense of blaming "ancient tribal rivalries" for the conflicts--the excuse so often (and conveniently) cited in other afflicted regions of the continent. Instead, we watch as one warlord fights another to grab territory without even bothering to pretend to have a social agenda, two-bit gangsters terrorize the populace without worry of retribution, and millions and millions of people suffer while the rest of the world pays little or no attention.

If the Congo were a market for American goods, if it exported something we need (like oil), or if there were American corporate interests to protect, we would care. The deaths of five million humans and the malnutrition, disease, and loss of hope endured by millions more apparently don't matter.

Perhaps the saddest element in the entire picture is that there is no end in sight.
