Ah, I always love voices of common sense. Thanks for these thoughts -- and I agree. It would be one thing if the Christmas season actually was practiced as a true religious holiday, but for the most part, I see an awful lot of "Christians" merely celebrating an excuse to go nuts for a month and spend money. While I am not Jewish, I notice that less materialism (and more somber respect) is linked to the Jewish holidays. I suspect this will change, if merchants have their way. But for now, I truly respect people who keep their religious holidays, religiously.

Powerful essay, with great meaning to all of us who've lost a parent. At the risk of shameless promotion here (and none is intended) I want to mention that I posted a review on my Gather section of a wonderful book called ALWAYS TOO SOON, which is about dealing with the loss of our parents. Again, Kathryn, this is a wonderful tribute.

Very informative article. I wish there had been more like this when I was pregnant (years ago). Caffeine was very controversial back in the mid 1980s -- although alcohol was definitely a no-no. Today I write for several parenting magazines, and am always happy to see younger moms like you so attuned to healthy information. Well done.

Hi from Michigan ... this is a great topic, "pass it forward." When I recovered from major hip surgery, I received so much help -- and couldn't possibly pay back all the kindness and favors given to me. But now, when someone needs me, I jump in to help without thinking what there is in "return."

I've heard many wonderful things about this movie, and will go see it when it hits the theaters in the Detroit area. Thanks for the reminder. Another feel-great movie I loved, LARS AND THE REAL GIRL, is a story about healing and community. The premise sounds a little weird -- but it's PG and has a great message. I love independent film !

I can't remember the last time I didn't have cats at home ... I have two now, and while it took them a couple of months to accept each other, today they are best friends and curl up together when they sleep at the end of the bed. Since I work at home as a writer, they are the best company ... they don't talk (unless they want lunch) and they don't need to be let outside to go to the bathroom. Enjoy your pets!

I think we all talk about people, in one way or another, to try to make sense of ourselves and our world. The word "gossip" implies negative talk ...

Hmmmmm.... I suppose this is why our culture is so obsessed with celebrities and rehashing all the dumb things they do? At least that's better than trashing our real friends ....

I won't be purchasing fruitcake, either ... but this is the second year my husband and I have decided not to purchase any gifts for friends and family members. (The exception being very small kids, who'll still get a gift from us.) We sat down and added up how much $$$$$$ we spend on everyone, and decided to write a check in that amount for the local Boys & Girls Club, which does wonderful things for kids in need in our area. Everyone is catching on, and instead of buying gifts for us, they donate to a favorite charity instead...For the first time in ages, we really feel like we recaptured the real spirit of Christmas in our family.
