Ann, where do you get your interpretation of the separation of church and state?

All I've found in the United States Constitution regarding religion is that the state shall not respect the establishment of religion. The phrase has an entirely different meaning than the one you portray.

Georgiana, it doesn't matter how long ago it was. That was the founders of our country and what they intended it to be. With all of their wisdom, they almost got it right.
And, yes, religion is the basis of all morality - like it or not.

George, no legitimate religion would do that.

Someone who wanted to use religion to bolster his own power made up that heresy thing.
Unfortunately, there is no shortage of people who still abuse religion in a similar fashion.

But Christmas is not about teddy bears. Christmas and teddy bears have nothing in common. "Teddy Bears and Christmas go together like peanut butter and jelly" - what a ridiculous inference.

Regarding the Texas holdem poker tournament: does not using a cell phone or blackberry open the possibility of cheating? What safeguards were in place to ensure that someone wasn't texting the cards held by other players, for instance? Perhaps those players were really paying more attention than they should?

Not to me you’re not.

I personally do not have a wireless communication device. That's part because I do not want to deal with things like "minutes" and other cell phone service features. I just want to have a telephone that works, at home, when I wish to call someone or someone calls me. I also do not want to have that one more thing that I would have to carry with me through the day that might "go off" when I'm busy with whatever I'm doing, especially if that happens to be driving my car.
I'm okay with being unreachable when I'm away from home. I like it that way.

Actually, it's nice to have the beach all to oneself.

It probably won't. What about the end of the world? When is The Sun expected to become a supernova? Our encounter with Nemesis is expected to occur much sooner than that.

Yeah, I'd like to have the "Articles For Me" section back. Somehow, I do not believe that we'll ever see that again. (Or the Gather home page with selected articles from the Gather Essentials groups - I still miss that.)

I'm not sure that Kevin would be of much help on this one. He seems to be more knowledgeable about "tricks" for doing stuff on Gather. But, I might be wrong.

I do know of another Gather member whom I believe to be knowledgeable about this kind of stuff, but I'm not sure that I should just volunteer her for this.

Anyway, shortly after I joined Gather, I noticed that some people do get a great deal of comments. As of yet, I still haven't figured out how it's done. So, I've resigned to be satisfied with the few comments that I do get.

Yikes. When the power came back on, Windows should have done an automatic disk check. Could this other person have canceled the check?
What operating system are you using? (Windows XP? Windows 7?)

Anyway, you might try starting your computer in "safe mode". Try pressing the 'F8' key before the Windows logo appears.
If you are able to, you could go into the msconfig.exe utility from start→Run...
Type "msconfig.exe" into the box. From there, you can turn off unnecessary start-up programs and utilities that might have become corrupted. In the 'Services' tab, you should check "Hide All Microsoft Services" and then un-check everything that remains. In the ‘Startup’ tab, click on ‘Disable All‘.
If the computer then starts up, it is then a matter of selectively re-enabling some items at a time to determine which is causing the problem.

Another cause of your problem might be a loose connection on a hardware component, such as a DVD drive. This wouldn't have been caused by a power outage, though. Moving or jarring the tower might cause a connection to open.
Fixing that problem would require unplugging the computer, opening the case and physically pushing the connectors to each drive back into place.

Perhaps, if you want to try it again next year, you might try showing up before the event starts. I suspect that the lines were much shorter at 5:30 PM.
