I agree. The ocean is one of those out of sight out of mind places where we mindlessly dump just about any kind of waste. It is tragic, really since beneath the surface an entire incredible community is simply trying to survive.

It is the lighthouse at Sandy Neck, Barnstable Harbor, MA. This is actually my favorite shot of it.

Thank you all! It is a photograph but I added a little glow to it, mostly for the sake of nostallgia. Lighthouses get me too. It was fun being able to see this one so often this summer and catch some different angles and light on it.

No one actually knows why the whales breach but there are some theories some of the spiritual nature and some down right practical. On the practical side it might be to knock barnacles off. Some whales have more than their fair share of these hitch-hikers and while they do no damage they might itch! I have a great shot of a breaching whale that shows the barnacle creatures actually out of their housing... it is amazing. I will look for it and add it to the article if I can locate the shot.

Breaching might also be to aid in their digestion. These are big animals with little fiber in their diet ;)

They might also breach to let others know where they are, establish territory or simply to get a better view. They might also do it just because they can!

But they might also do it out of play and sheer joy. And/or perhaps all of the above.

The best thing we Americans can do for the environment is to stop wasting it. Building more industrial power plants like wind power plants, that take up so much open space and precious wildlife habitat and lolls millions of birds and bats, only causes more damage not less. The first thing we need to do is to stop the waste of electricity, clean up our dirty power plants and become energy efficient. Covering our land and seas with wind power is not the answer. Taking individual responsibility is. We are a consumer driven wasteful society and these wind plants are symbols of that consumerism and waste.

As to birds. Wind farms are killing birds and bats by the millions. The newer turbines kill just as many as the old. The blades on the new turbines only appear to be turning slowly when in fact they are traveling at over 200mph at their tips. A brand new wind farm in NY has shown to have killed 10,000 birds and bats in its first year of operation. A brand new wind farm off the coast of Norway was responsible for wiping out the breeding population of the endangered white-tailed eagle in ten months including all of their babies.

I've heard of Sockeye but have not seen him. He is famous, however. We, too, had a number of whales under our boat... a couple actually scratching their backs :) but the boat is big and no danger of tipping. What a gret experience you had. I wish I had seen him in person for you.

Oh thank you cybergwen :) We grandmas love to hear that. my grand babes are from 2 1/2 to 17. Am so proud of them all. Being a grandma is the best possible gift.
