As did I, Peter. I lived effectively on one small farm or another until I was fourteen. If I never weed again, that will work for me, though I didn't mind milking so much.

Like Ruth, though, I have to applaud the notion that children are taught about the hard work and efforts made to bring food to the table. Too often today, I think, children seem to think everything grows on Cheetos-trees and the like in the back of the store. Processed or unprocessed, there are many people between where the food first is grown/raised/created and our grocery shelves, and hard work from inspectors, transporters, etc.

I don't think so, Peter. I don't understand it either. It doesn't seem like a very practical toy, almost like a set from a wooden train set where the artist couldn't decide if it were part of the train or part of the decor.

My daughters and son all played with dolls and stuffed animals, with play kitchens, but they all played with toy cars as well. Silly me, they play together.

You forgot the gender stereotypes. I don't consider myself atheist and, if fact, there are concepts and principles underlying nearly all (if not all) religions I believe and live.

It's the baggage that gets tagged along with it that's hard for me to swallow. There is nothing wrong with a loving family where members are sensitive to the needs of those around them, but the treacle and whitewash, the strict adherence to predefined roles and responsibilities, make it seem less wholesome to me.

Maybe it's because, though I think I have a loving family, we yell at each other frequently. My kids wear mostly store-bought clothes (I've never crocheted anything that would have fit by the time I was through). I'm as likely to send my teenage daughter or husband downstairs to make dinner as I am to rustle up food myself, if not more so.
