There is something to be said for arranged marriages; emotional expectations are low.
I'm not one to comment, though - never married at 41.

I wanted to draw your attention to last weeks New Yorker profile on Nora Roberts; an extremely prolific novelist with her pulse on the market.

Lauren Collins, Profiles, “Real Romance,” The New Yorker, June 22, 2009, p. 60

Nora Roberts has published a hundred and eighty-two novels. In a typical year, she publishes five “new Noras”: two installments of a paperback original trilogy; two J.D. Robb books; and each summer, the “big Nora”—a hardcover standalone romance novel. Twenty-seven Nora Roberts books are sold every minute. Roberts grosses sixty million dollars a year, Forbes estimated in 2004, more than John Grisham or Stephen King.

“You know, writing’s creative and all this, certainly, but you don’t just wander around dreaming,” Roberts says. “That’s not what you’re getting paid for.”

"A self-taught writer, and an irreverent one, Roberts was not, at first, an easy sell. Nancy Jackson, the editor of Roberts’s first novel, notes that Roberts “didn’t follow the formula as strictly as others.” Roberts is as uninterested in the literary establishment as she is unloved by it.

No. We will not find humans out there since evolution (ours included) is a discontinuous process determined by major geologic-astronomic, ie. random, events. Since those events (ice ages, meteors, volcanic explosions, arrangement of continents) will differ, life will look very different.

I expect that water would be scarce, so that the density of life and size of the beings would be smaller.

My guess, is that extraterstrial life will be more practical. Since interplanetary travel (to habitable planets) is not realistically possible, their lives will be focused on living in harmony with the planet.

Also, ET societies would likely be less fuel-energy focused. They may not have had such a lush history of planetary life (the source of our burnt fuels). Perhaps they would be more plant-like, directly accessing the sun's power.

I love this post. It's a wedding summer for me as well (last week on the cape, this week-end in Newport, the following weekend in NYC for my sister). I will have spent a fortune on gifts and travel. You can't win with wedding food anyway-they inevitably offer overcooked salmon and the dining room (in summer) always smells of fish.

I decided to compound the sin of the paper-waste invitations, by sending heavy weight multi-page cards encrusted with beads and glitter with my cash gifts. My sarcasm was wasted on the brides.

If you need someone with whom to escape a weekday pasta dinner, ping me.

I wonder if they ever did an open lung biopsy (on you or on patients in the immune modulation study) to exclude other rarer disease such as sarcoidosis. Sarcoid and other immune disorders would also respond to steroids and cyclosporin, but would be unrelated to smoking and might have specific therapies.
