OMG your articles always crack me up. Agricultural equipment turning violent without provocation or remorse. Love it! Of course, people in my family treat my husband the same way when I go away, his mother even paying visits because she's just not sure my husband can feed himself while I'm away.

I love to read. That was why I first came to Gather. That is why I'm still here (even though I took a LONG break and may only peek in from time to time). I take the time to read and then take the time to comment on what I read, even if it's only a few words ... because I finish what I start. But I also like to write and when I get the urge, I know it's here for me. I can share, vent, teach, cause others to consider another POV, lots of good stuff. And HEY if I get points for it, HURRAY! But my Gather experience was never about POINTS. OK, maybe just before Christmas is was (in all honesty), but now it's about the fun of it all.

bee-you-tee-ful pictures!!! Sorry about the search issues. But, in the end, you never know what else might pop up. This is never good for me since I am easily distracted and end up forgetting what I was searching for initially cause I end up reading something else that comes up in the search. Maybe THAT's what they're hoping for. Some twisted way of getting all of our articles more readers. XD

My thoughts, as a parent whose kids have been uniform-less until this year (for my middle schooler): I love the idea. School is not a fashion show - it's the place to learn. We live in a country that is quickly descending on the ladder of success stories in the way of academic achievement and qualified workers. Our economy is in trouble now, but what will happen when 50% of the workforce is supporting the other 50% of the population because we have an aging population of baby boomers PLUS a bunch of people that didn't take school seriously enough to get good-paying jobs? Extreme? Perhaps - but it could be on the horizon if things don't change.

As far as two sets of clothes and expense - what? I bought my son 5 pairs of khaki shorts on sale at Penney's and a belt plus 5 white polo tops for $120. I also bought him 3 pairs of khaki pants on sale at BJ's wholesale for $12 each. He already had black shoes. That's the cheapest school shopping I have EVER done. He'll need two more pairs of khakis once fall weather really hits us, but that's neglible and gives me some time. He already has other clothes for after-hours. If he needs more, I'll either wait for a sale or go to the Salvation Army of Goodwill. Who's going to know? That's one of the ways I save money as it is. One child could cost you $400 easy when school shopping, so I know it can be expensive. The uniforms situation was a God-send. My daughter cost me $300 between the clothes, shoes, socks, underwear, bras, etc.!

As for stunting personal growth, self-expression, blah blah blah ... stuff it. They have hours outside of school in which to do that. They have weekends. They have friends they see in the neighborhood. Hey, if they want to, they could wear funky socks, fashion jewelry, or WATCH OUT - two different shoes. As long as they're black, they're still within code, right? If they want to push the limits ... er ... sorry ... express themselves, they can just think outside the box while staying within the code. :)

Bottom line: as long as there are parents that don't know/care how their kids dress or how they treat other kids and as long as there are parents that are oblivious to the crappy jobs they are doing in raising their kids (example: I have had friends of my kids' visit our home that have ZERO manners), we will have to have school district intervention to keep the focus on learning. My 10 y/o daughter wants to dress like Hannah Montana-ho (we also call her Hannah Ho-tana) and Bratz/hooker dolls, but there's no way in HELL that's going to happen. If that means I have to drive her butt to school, peek in on her during the day, and pick her butt up, I will. It's my way or the highway! She will dress in a respectable manner appropriate for her age at all times or she will get only basic necessities and plenty of humiliation from me (and I mean in the form of mom driving her back and forth to school).

And ChriJerri - they have started a new program here in elem and middle schools that if kids want to spend money in the "snack" line, they have to have a signed note from a parent in order to do so ... and the note has to state what they are allowed to purchase and how much. Not sure if that will really solve anything, but it will deter the kids from bringing piggy bank money to school to buy ice cream. Why would they offer that junk anyway???

I would not have even accepted them in the first place. When he called, I would have said, "Uh, no, they're not ready because I'm not repairing them anymore - so please come and get them!" He's a jack ass. I hate people like this. Do we all live to serve them? Sorry you had to deal with him. Send him a letter (or postcard) to reinforce that you're no longer going to repair his machine!

I am a Girl Scout Leader. I have served in the past as a Board member in our community but that got stale and I felt as though I wasn't being utilized. I have helped out with activities at my kids' schools (no, I'm NOT involved with the PTA - blech!) and have also done the same with my son was in Cub Scouts.

PTA is a joke. It is nothing more than another opportunity for those with superiority complexes to be in charge and it's also a political group that, in the end, does far less for the kids than they portray.

ALSO - AirTran has a set number of 'business class' seats where you have more legroom and the reclining of the seats ahead of you won't affect your laptop-working pleasures. :) I can't say enough good things about them. Their fresh-air policy allowed me to enjoy my vacation sinus-attack free, their attendants were genuinely nice and hospitable, and the prices were much better than the other airlines. Plus, they don't yet charge for the first bag per person!

John, having gotten back from San Diego just a over two weeks ago, I can tell you that AirTran allows you to choose your seat at time of booking for $6 more per seat per flight. For a family of four that privilege was going to cost me just under $100 (2 flights each direction). So, we took a chance, knowing full well they couldn't deny us a seat if we'd reserved months ahead of time. We sat all together the way out and on the way home, we got a reprieve from our kids since they were seated on the opposite side of the plane in different rows. :) Sometimes turning down options can be a good thing. :) Well, that and the fact that they're now 10 and 12 helped. We probably couldn't have gotten away with it if they were like the 5 year-old kidney kickers.
