WOW. Great idea. I would love to see the maps kids would make.

I also think it's fascinating to have people define their neighborhoods. Where does a neighborhood begin and end? I live at Teale Square and consider Davis part of my neighborhood, but not much of Arlington, even though Arlington is much closer. And anything up toward Tufts is just no-man's land!

This is hilarious. Because I know all your kids (I know Macky and my son's daycare goes to the same park as Macky and Micheal's daycare) all I could think while reading this was "Who is it? Is it A? Is it B?" Hehehe.

I MUST make time to come to the park this week, if only to find out who's the Hummer!

Great story, Macky!

The thing that I related to was the shoes. When I was a kid we got new shoes for school in the fall, generally a size or two too big. We stuffed tissue into the toes to keep feet from slipping. In the summer, we almost never wore shoes at all. We kept our shoes in the car, to squeeze into when we went into the grocery store. It was completely normal for me to leave the house bare footed until I left Iowa.

One of my biggest moments of culture shock after moving to Boston to go to BU was the time just a couple weeks after my arrival, when I walked out of my dorm barefoot and crossed Kenmore Square shoeless. I was just going out to get a slice from a pizza window. It was a hot day. Why on Earth would I bother with shoes?

Well, people were FURIOUS. At first I had no idea what the problem was. I was confused. Strangers were looking at me and even yelling at me. When I figured out that it was considered dangerous to be outside without shoes, I felt terrible and humiliated. I was trying so hard to be sophisticated and to hide my provincial tendencies. Whew. I'm glad that's over!

One of the top 20 worst moments of my life, which, like most of the worst moments has evolved into just another good story! Hey, that would make a good post..."The 20 worst moments of my life which have evolved into funny stories." Or something like that.

Thanks for the quick web 2.0 tutorial. I've been hearing this term floating around without ever having gotten such a concise defintion.

I do think that Gather is in tune to the user as a co-developer, but I also think they could trust the user more.

Hey! Me too!

I got the feeling from that Miers didn't really want the job in the first place. I could hear her voice trembling when she had to speak in front of the journalists the first time, on the day her nomination was announced. I felt sorry for her.

As for what W was thinking? He was surely thinking that he could trust Miers to be loyal to him. He has gotten away with a lot of bullshit the past few years. He might be feeling invincible.

I'm an advocate of letter writing. I'm one of the last people I know still doing it. I write regularly (by that I mean every 3-6 months) to about 40 people. Five of those people write back to me.

I don't care whether people write back or not. It makes a huge difference when you get to see your far-away friends that they have had something from you within the past six months.

But I have nothing bad to say about the technological alternatives. I use email every day. I love Instant Messager. I have an egroup for disseminating news of my son. I have another egroup for keeping in touch with people I knew in Iowa. I have three blogs. It's all useful.

I certainly don't think that people I interact with are talking more and saying less. Maybe I'm just lucky, but I get to have a lot of great old-fashioned conversation in my life.

Anyhow, I loved both of these stories. Use that old typwriter! Send someone a letter.

It also depends a lot on the technology. Something like MySpace or Gather doesn't cost anything except a little time. I don't have the money to be a technology enthusiast most of the time. People are a lot more forgiving of glitches in a website they use for free than they are in their $400 digital camera.

Doesn't PBS have cartoons on Saturday morning still?

I mean, I know that's not what you're talking about, but I do think they still run some 'toons.

I used to get up before 5AM to watch the old Batmasn series, which was the first thing on TV Saturday mornings. I'd tiptoe downstairs from my room and turn the TV on to static, with the volume low as low, and lay down on the carpet in front of the TV, waiting for the patriotic music of the pre-Batman TV wake-up.

North Carolina is actually not half bad. I lived in Durham for a little while and was shocked to find the Durham/Carrboro area pretty cool. I dare say I liked it there.
