Good question. That's the biggest challenge facing China. There will be major breakthroughs in energy-efficiency and renewable energy technologies, which will not only save China, but also benefit the world.... My upcoming book on the Chinese middle class will cover these topics.

There is also a lot of optimism, but also a lot of anxiety too. Many middle class people are worrying about their children's education, social security, etc. because they know the government is not going to take care them anymore. 80% of households in the cities own their homes - I believe this is the majority.

I am not a tourist myself in China. I return to my parents' home and visit my old friends. Also, my interview is about the middle class people and they are mostly in the cities now.

Thanks for the comment. The newer generation of Chinese have different attitude about work and life balance, specially this new middle class people - they want to travel, they want to enjoy luxury, and they want to buy summer houses in South France! Things have changed so much in just last a few years!

Thank you, everyone, for your comments. I remember Tom Friedman said in his book "The World Is Flat" that Chinese and Indians are competing us to the top, not to the bottom. As a native Chinese myself, I see American and China have different strengths and weakness, and they can really learn from each other. The important thing is that we don't get too complacent.
