Love your poem, Kathryn, and I agree wholeheartedly with the sentiments it contains. I am, however, getting tired of raking leaves. I actually enjoy it, but we have so many trees, it seems to never end.

I'm not doing much shopping this year; I will buy a few small things. I've re-learned what the holidays are all about, and I'm with Elsie: good company and good food sound heavenly to me.

Are you bringing this up because she just announced the end of her talk show? She's not "leaving" until Sept. 2011, and then she's starting her own cable network (OWN), so I suspect she'll still be around to influence people who want to follow her suggestions.

I think eBooks are a bigger threat to traditional publishing than Oprah leaving her talk show.

I wonder how many authors who do make a living from their writing would continue to write if they never made another dime from it.

I realize that someone could be published without making much money from it, but unless it's self-publishing, I wouldn't expect publishers would continue with an author who didn't generate sales.

I'm sure that some would write strictly for pleasure, but I expect many would not. There is that need for most writers to have others read their work and that's more difficult to accomplish if one is not published.

I never said it was the answer, nor do I believe that only one answer exists.

It was said rather tongue-in-cheek, but I have spoken to many writers who would love to write full-time, and unless one is independently wealthy, a steady paycheck is a necessity. A novel that hits can be lucrative for that lucky author.

Great idea, Alison! Sometimes people are more willing (and able) to donate items from home instead of cash. I hope it increases their donations.

I would encourage everyone to find out what their closest shelter will accept (it's usually a long list) and donate items whenever possible. Our shelter has an itemized list on their web site of items they are lookig for- they even accept old cars (junkers) that they sell for cash.

Just as with children, I think it's important to be aware of typical behaviors and when you see something different, investigate.

Today, she seems fine, but it could have had a much different outcome. I am very grateful for the opportunity to continue to have her in my home- hopefully for a long time to come.

Hi, Jennifer.

Luckily, I read the printouts the vet provides with all medications- it said to keep on eye on the pet for several hours after the injection and look for certain signs. When she started scratching at her face and I could see the skin was bright red, I knew something was wrong. It was a little unusual, according to the vet; she said allergic reactions typically show up on a second dose, and this was Jada's third rabies shot.

Just goes to show that there is no such thing as an exact science.

Hi, Alison!

I don't know for sure, but I'm guessing food banks would accept pet food. As far as the pet blankets, I would call your local shelter and ask them what sizes they might need. I'm sure they would be very grateful to receive them.

I'm planning to make some for our shelter with my teenage daughter. Small things can be a great comfort to an animal waiting for a home.

It's one of the great American dreams; stay home in your pajamas and get paid enormous amounts of money to write stories on your computer. :D
