Sophie, you have to be patient. The best successes I have had are actually cheating. I've joined in bookrings or bookrays (look in the forums) for certain books I wanted to read, such as the Undead series by MaryJanice Davidson or The Curious Incident of the Dog... These books have travelled to the UK, Finland, Peru, Argentina, Costa Rica, Serbia, Australia, Canada, and all over the US. Or, if you travel, you can look up where books have been wildreleased and check around the cafes, post offices or parks for books.

ooh, well put. I completely agree. I am a die-hard Hillary chick and I agree that race, gender, religion and a million other factors have always played a role in the nominations. We are what we are. Hill is a woman, Barack is half black, McCain is a good ole white boy. These are facts. I agree that Hill is at her best when she's appreciating what Barack brings to the Dems. I love that he's created buzz and appeals to many targets. But I too "scratch my head in emptiness trying to contemplate a future with him as President." Thanks for giving words to my ambivalence. I voted for Hillary in Tx, but I would be ok with Obama, just not as certain of where that would lead us.

OY! I'm in the middle (or beginning) of reading this book and here is the comment I just posted for the article Christine Zibas wrote, A Wonderful New Author Discovery for Me: Michael Chabon.
I am having a hard time reading The Yiddish Policeman's Union. Has anyone else read it? I'm thinking I just don't like the characters and the situation. It's supposed to be noir-ish, but I find it depressing. Noir is supposed to be bleak, but when it's depressing, is it not well done or too obscure. Not sure which. Also, I'm only on page 80, should I keep going and see if it turns around. I've really enjoyed some books that I had a hard time starting. Help!

Now that I've read your review and everyone else's comments, I think I'm just going to put it down. Thanks for your well written review. I'm glad you liked it, too. I wanted to, but I just couldn't.

try adding some fresh chopped herbs to the breadcrumb/parmesean mixture! I love fresh parsley, oregano, or rosemary.

You've gotten some amazing advice here. I don't know if anyone else mentioned it, but when kids go through growth spurts, their bodies all the sudden may go a little wacky and they get clumsy, brain patterns that had been worked out have to readjust to the new growth. It's hard growing so quickly. Relapses are perfectly normal. Hang in there! He'll be fully trained before high school, I promise.

There is nothing wrong with adults drinking responsibly while their kids are around. That's really how they learn that drinking in moderation is ok. I love the idea of kicking back and enjoying some dancing with the kids, talking with friends. I've not heard of this, but it sounds like a blast. Have an amazing time!

We have two older kids and my parents will take one for a weekend or even a week. We get to have the other one to ourselves and they get one on one spoiling from the grandparents. We trade off each time, so they each get a turn, but it's been great for them. They even realize that they miss each other after a few days and they'll call each other and want to talk. I think it's a great way to let them grow together and apart!

This is great. I'd love to get my son interested in these. Wow! Amazon is almost sold out of the two books (Vikings and Ancient Egypt). The reviews were great over there, too. I'll definitely try to get my hands on them.

I totally agree with you! I love chick lit. I agree with Margay and Linda. Total escapism. And sometimes when its fun and I've enjoyed it, I'm in a better mood to enjoy my family and hubby.

Our cat died this summer and my kids (8 and 5) were sad for awhile. My son would bring him up for weeks afterwards. I was very distraught, and kids are incredibly sensitive to their parent's feelings (IMHO), so it could've been an echo of my sadness. Now it's been a few months and they understand that death is final.

My son went though a phase at about 4 and now my daughter at 5 is going through the similar phase of asking about death and what it means. It freaked me out with my son. I didn't want to discuss death with a 4 year old. But I answered his questions at what I thought was his level. He'd ask more if he wanted more, but he seemed satisfied with my answers (yes, when you die you don't come back). We didn't get into discussions of spirits or souls.

At 2 1/2 your son won't understand much other than Fred is gone. He may be sad, but he'll learn from it. I think kids are more resilient than we give them credit. I think picking out a new fish might be a nice way for him to understand that you can't replace Fred, but life must go on. Then again, I don't know your son. You do. Trust your gut.
