nancy, This is a fast-paced chapter. The first paragraph quickly threw us into the story. And I love the Laughlin setting. I can see it. I thought the back story about Paul was handled smoothly. The only nitpick I have is your use of caps, but that may just be me. A 10 definitely. Check out my entry: The Oracle

THE ORACLE is a thriller with a high-stakes plot touching on border security, government spying, and terrorism with an undercurrent of fear-mongering and racism. The novel opens with two preteen boys witnessing the murder of two men (one African American, one Hispanic), an act committed by members of the boys' own families. Sixteen years later, we see one of the boys as an adult, torn between family loyalty and his own sense of right and wrong, and drawn into a high-stakes conspiracy over which he has no control.

Julie, I have a couple of questions for you (since you know a lot about rights). Penguin and amazon are jointly sponsoring a novel writing competiton and by entering, the entrant gives Penguin "exclusive first publication rights to the entry" until a certain date when the entrant is eliminated from the contest. Does this mean the entrant gives away the first rights to the manuscript?

Thanks for putting out such quality writing. I love the story. The beginning took me for a ride at once. I like the way you smoothly segued into the flashback through his observation of the braided fob. The descriptions of Charleston brought me there. I can see it.

Can't wait for the book!

Thanks for sponsoring the first chap competition. Can't wait for the next one. Yes, there are holes that need to be plugged, but a good start nonetheless. I agree with the comment that it would be nice to include a book jacket type of description. It would help set up the story. That's how some of us make decisions in buying books anyway. Also, include some other genre: mystery, historical, etc

Lots of useful information here on the pitfalls of posting excerpts on the web. Many thanks for the warning, Julie. I do agree with some of the individuals that Julie is too wedded to the industry. I have seen some pretty crappy books published by the so called industry that Julie so highly regarded. At the same time, I've seen some really absorbing manuscripts in my writers groups and conferences I've attended like Squaw Valley that never see the light of day because this so called industry gods can't see beyond the trend or the dollars. This is the 21st century and independent publishing is no longer a taboo, despite what Julie thinks. But she is right, you have to act like a publisher and promote, promote, promote. It is not all that hard to get reviews, get articles written about you and your book, get distributed by wholesalers like Ingram or Baker & Taylor , and put your books in Barnes and Noble and Borders if you have a good angle, and are passionate about marketing your work. Real writers write because they have to. And if they really believe in the merit of their manuscript, they must do whatever it takes and whatever medium to get their work out there and not let this so called industry rule them.
