All classics were once new.

As I've often said, I started reading young. I'd read anything I could get my hands on from Lord of the Flies to Candy. I was well into my reading before I understood genres existed. I guess to me, a story was a story. I didn't dismiss Aesop because a fox instead of a human couldn't get the grapes.

Needless to say, I write all over the map from SF to literary fiction. I write the story, then look for the genre.

Someone at work learned the other day I'm a writer. He said he bets I get lots of story ideas from work. I said: "I doubt you'll understand this, but no. Not enough drama and not enough conflict." I think I disturbed his world. I'd say to the average person, we're drowning in conflict and drama.

Well, it must be interesting drama and conflict.

I like my job. Low expectations, easy work. At 55 years old, I can use the workout and can't afford a gym.

I'm going to pop out some books next year like Jon and Kate popped out some babies. If I can get 1/100 the notability for being a great writer that Jon and Kate got for being stupid, I'll have it made.

A deconstruction is a systematic breakdown of the elements in a work of literature, if you didn't know that. Sometimes, when someone deconstructs my work, telling me the meaning, I say, "Yeah, wow, I didn't think anyone would get that!" even though I hadn't written that meaning in.

Doesn't matter it was a typo ~ it was good.

I'm an overnight stock boy, PC ~ grocery clerk, making $8:50 an hour, plus one free cup of coffee a shift, which we fought hard to get. Come February, I get a $.25 ah hour bump, maybe get that tank of gas for the car I've had my eye on. You read the other article, you see what I'm up against.

The worst thing about my job is having to tolerate the ignorance of other human beings. I bet that's true with just about any job.

And, I agree. I'm a damn good copy-editor. If I had my masters, I could apply to do that, maybe even get a job as a proofreader.

I don't have, if you've not seen my boast, the benefit of a formal education. I'll share my secret with you. I learned to write by copy-editing the work of others. The example above is streamlined. The original piece doesn't have grammar errors, just mechanical errors. What takes the time in copy-editing the way I do it, is explaining why I don't like something. A 3,000 word short story can take as much as eight or twelve hours.

My real education came in copy-editing 250 first chapters in the Gather first chapter contest. At first, people resisted me, fighting every suggestion. I argued, then ignored. I pressed on, working chapter and chapter, simply copy-editing, proofreading, posting, moving on. In the beginning, I wasn't sure of many things. I'd look stuff up, cross reference. When I made a suggestion, I was sure I was correct.

What you see above is where it brought me. I can actually copy-edit my own work, which I'm in the process of doing now. I started writing in '99, which is a problem. I have 12 books I have to copy-edit/rewrite/proofread. I'm a better writer now than when I wrote them.

My suggest is this: copy-edit the work of others. Not for them, but for yourself.

Let me do this: let's look at something of yours. Something short, say less than 3,000 words. We'll work through it together over some time.

Now I'm rambling.

Ferosh, treat yourself to my writing. My short stories are reader friendly, about 1,000 words, but like a good brownie, they're so meaty and rich, they'll make your teeth hurt.
