I was interested in what you had to say -- and no doubt will be on what the book has to say -- about John and Abigail's marriage. Sounds like a partnership both in step with and ahead of its time.

interesting -- those are the two that really do not resonate with me.

I know several really fine writers who do not write all the time, and that tends to be my practice too. thinking about the subject, ideas, angles, sure, but doing other things with the idea than writing. I think it's a matter of what suits you particular creative personality -- either way works.

as for criticism, for me it's best to focus on goals instead. then I can use criticism, or not, as seems best. learning to thrive on it gives it too much prominence. again, a difference in creative personality.

ones that do resonate with me are 3, 4, and 6. the 6 in my case being the subject -- music -- rather than the process of writing about it.

Julia, that's one way to do it, but I'm really thinking of more than just finding a local person who's been affected by a national story. this isn't going to be a really good example, because it's a review, not a news piece, but it's one of mine so I knew where to find it... in this story I think you will see both local elements and wider ideas.

this album, incidentally, is up for an award just now -- quite a surprise to the artists, who figured they were loving a side project which wouldn't get much attention

it seems to me it's important still to report regional stories, stories with a regional voice, and to find thoughful ways to connect them not just with national and international concerns and stories, but with lasting/evergreen ideas -- family, faith, enviroment, relating to each other in the community, for example. keeping an eye on both smaller and larger story. you're right, there's a lot of noise out there.

catching up on reading the comments, I just came across your distinction between writing 'for the love of it' and writing for commercial success. you write
"I believe both can exist in the same place (as they do here). But I think it's important to choose a path explicitly. To write for the sake of the art and be disappointed by the commercial success of that effort would seem foolish. Likewise, to write for commercial success and expect critical acclaim might seem to be overreaching as well."

with respect, I see your distinction and it's quite limiting. if this how you choose to define writing for Gather, that's fine, it is your business and you're the CEO, and that may be entirely appropriate for the community (or not. I'm sure others will weigh in on that). but do recognize that it is your choice. there are many other directions and ways to approach writing, for a living or otherwise.

I'm considering tapping into the idea of nanowrimo to work on a creative non fiction project. I've done quite a bit of research, and part of a framework/story arc. will be finishing that up. maybe today.

being one of those writers who has written for top publications, I will be interested to see how this goes. I hope your conversations with the editor prove fruitful. I'd change your wording /thinking of 'support some the best writers in the world' to 'work with,' however. it's an agreement between equals.

it seems to me from your description that the $450 a month you mention as compensation is derived from ad revenue/page views that a writer generates, rather than being a a retainer or a guaranteed amount. do I understand that correctly?

it strikes me that the intent of this program is very market driven. not meaning that in a disparaging way, just asking. in other words, the writers in this program will be trained to write around Google/bing trending topics or similar subjects, items which appear to be of immediate topical interest?

you may recall that I was one of the early members of the correspondent program. my audience was/is largely the MPR/NPR/Speaking of Faith demographic, interested in discovering and discussing new ideas rather than hearing a lot about trending topics. is there are place for reaching that audience in this new program?
