As far as rock versions of classic Christmas tunes go, I'm a big fan of the Dandy Warhols take on Little Drummer Boy. It's an almost "shoegaze" verison. They sound as though they didn't just simply dial it in. The Dandy's even sound sincere with a little sneer!

Still can't get enough of John Prine's "Christmas in Prison." You really get a feeling of what it must be like being incarcerated over the holiday's.

Mr Prine can write a song, "It was Christmas in prison and the food was real good/we had turkey and pistols carved out of wood/and I dream of her always/even when I don't dream her name's on my tongue
and her blood's in my stream.

My runner up to the White Stripes "White Blood Cells" has to be Wilco "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot." I remember how messy it was with their label at the time. Reprise Records refused to release it because it wasn't commercial enough...the band acquired the rights to the album & left the label.

I think Wilco ultimately got the last laugh on that one. The album is loaded with GREAT songs! It even sold quite well & took the band to another level. That is when the major label's started becoming the bad guy with the general public.

I gotta pick the Old 97's album Fight Songs, in particular their clever little tune "Oppenheimer." That song is the bomb!

I always dig almost anything by the Rolling Stones on a road trip, but one song in particular is always awsome driving music...

It's got to be the epic rocker, "Can't You Hear Me Knockin" from their classic, Sticky Fingers. I have to be careful when driving not to play air guitar during the song!

That Avett Brothers album has been in my player for a couple months. I like how their songwriting has become more focused without totally losing what the band is all about.

Any number of rock artists who decide to make a classical work. Let's see there's Billy Joel, Pete Townshend, Joe Jackson, & even Sir Paul McCartney.

I remember when Cheap Trick went on tour when their 1st 3 album were reissued on CD and they played 3 consecutive nights at First Avenue.

The 2nd night Steven Tyler & Joe Perry from Aerosmith dropped by and did Train Kept a Rollin'. That was a very rock 'n roll moment!

Sure would be a treat to see the Husker Du put their differences aside and perform the 2 album set, Warehouse Songs & Stories in it's entirety!

The Stones definately made a few missteps in the 80's but seemed to surivive and even thrive.

I remember calling the Emotional Rescue album, Emotional Disco! I kinda think the Stones haven't made a great album since 1978's Some Girls.

Jefferson Airplane. later Jefferson Starship and later simply the Starship made some huge missteps. The Airplane seemed to stand for something and were possibly the voice of the summer of love.

By the eighties they recorded possibly the worst song ever, "We Built This City." I don't think any of their original fans were along for the ride. That one song cheapened the legacy of the Jefferson Airplane.

Still remember the AM Radio station had a contest...they had a given artist and song VS another artist and song...the one that recieved the most calls moved on to the next round, the other was out. The Beatles "Let it Be" was the champ!

now they barely have music on the AM Radio stations!
