So true, Patry. What I find troubling is literary people who assume that style alone can carry a book. I still need substance. Words alone...no matter how beautiful or artful...can not hold my attention. So in that regard, I fall back on the classics that can satisfy on a number of levels. They can be entertaining, well-plotted, and provide characters that are multidimensional and fully realized. My bookshelves are littered with current literary hits that were supposed to do all of this but fell short.

Yes, Jessie. There are lots of houseboats. I found out that the residents buy the mooring lot, so it isn't really cheaper!

I have about 6 different types of cheese in my refrigerator right now! My latest find: asiago fresco...

Yes, Laurie. The number of bikes on the road far exceeded the number of cars. And guess what...no pollution and a lot healthier people!

Jan--biking is terrific exercise. Since I got back, I bike in the gym with the TV on...not ideal, and not as picturesque, but it'll do!

Sigalit--they had the bike rental right at the train station in the Netherlands. What a great idea. It's such a smart way to get around.

I think we all need to know, as writers, that we are connecting with others. To write in a void, which I did for years, is satisfying on one level, but we still need to see how our words resonate with others. I'm so glad you found Gather!

Wonderful article, Kurt. Slow Food is a terrific organization. These artisinal products need to be protected from extinction. The state of bread for example is better now than it was 20 years ago in the USA, but in some places (like where I live) you have to search for a specialty yeast products without the added corn sugars. Thanks for this.

I had an awesome Springer Spaniel too--black and white named Max. What a wonderful, loving breed!
