BB - I don't know how I will feel when my Mom dies. Our relationship was distant, cold. I feel obligated and helpless as I see her deteriorate, but love isn't in the mix.

As to you and your husband - you never know who will go first...strange, surprises can happen.

Don, Do you think it's because of the quality of writing, or the fact that the BIG election is over - it was really politics that drove much of the excitement here on Gather and on every other blog space...

Good question Larry.

If you sense that the filmmaker, or writer, has made an attempt to present all sides of an issue, so you understand it in 3 or more dimensions as opposed to just a single POV To me that indicates something approaching "truth"...

Thanks Gary.

The past year, after I quit gather, I started writing for the magazine DOCUMENTARY. They've been publishing my book reviews and articles which are all focused on my field of Documentary film. It made me feel as though my writing had a purpose, beyond the more personal stuff here on Gather. I'll start reposting them here.

My mom is closer to your situation. Almost all her friends have died, including her husband of over 60 years. Loneliness is her companion.

Wilhelmine, It's been over a year since I last logged on to Gather. You were one of my favorite writers then and yours was the first article I read today. You are still one of my favorite writers. It's clear that the stroke has not negatively affected your creativity.

What is "normal" in one culture can be seen as completely abnormal in another. In terms of human evolution, there always appears the occasional "outlier" a person with a physical or behavioral trait that is way out on the fringes of what we might call "normal".

Now if it this extended breast feeding tactic by this mother as well as the other mothers who choose to follow this route, produces healthier, better adjusted children in the long run, that will be better for our species as a whole, and may gradually become the accepted "norm".

The fact that our culture was sold a bill of goods by corporate America, (predominantly the dairy industry in cahoots with companies like Nestlé who made infant formula in the post war error or era as you see fit) on the idea that it was "healthier" and more "modern" to bottle feed our babies on a fixed schedule, has done tremendous damage to our basic health and to the health of cultures worldwide. It has taken many, many years to fight back against these ideas and breast feeding mothers are still made to feel somehow offensive and out of place in a public setting in America today.

I think this woman may have appeared on 20/20 to make a political statement, or she may have been lured by some pay off by the producers if she appeared. In either case, I don't think it was a good move for the children in the family.

JEFFY - boy, you ARE REALLY dense.

Don't you realize that the SURGE was an acknowledgment that Shinseki had it right all along. If they (bushies "dream team") had listen to Shinseki from the get-go, we would never have had to stay in Iraq for 7 friggin years. It was a VERY belated tip of the old hat to Shinseki.

And your attitude towards the importance of Veterans Affairs (dogcatcher???) is TYPICAL of the entire disgusting way the bush chicken hawks ran our wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Respect the troops was all just so much blah, blah, blah for them. There was NO caring for the Vets under the bushies. They hid the deplorable conditions at Walter Reed and the mess that the VA was in in, under a rug, until some DEMOCRATS came to power (that was just about 2 years ago when the failed bush policies were forced into change - no coincidence there) and a few guilt ridden Republicans were shocked by how the bush admin abused the troops they used as poster children for their failed policies.

I see Lex crawled out from under his rock to leave a stinky little pile of his usual drivel at the top of your comments.

Reading the list depresses me. Thoughts like this are what spoiled my initial joy at Obama's win...We still have this garbage to deal with, as will our children and grandchildren. What a legacy;-(
